Every leadership journey also begins with a single step. For some the inspiration stems from their parents, some are influenced by the hardships they might have faced in life. In order to understand one's true self, it is critical to understand where they come from. In order to understand leaders and their journeys better, we indulged in deep conversations with them. These women leaders who are part of the South African legal industry, take us through their life journeys and share deep insights on leadership, life and more. One of the featured leaders is Gabriela Narotzky, the Legal Counsel at Lamna, a dynamic financier that operates across asset loans, bridging finance, as well as vehicle and dealership finance. Gabriela was born and raised in Benoni, South Africa. She started her journey with a broad legal education and later earned a master 's degree in Commercial and Banking Law. She also taught at the University of Johannesburg.Data from the Law Society of South Africa, indicates that female law practitioners account for 42% of South Africa's professionals, trying to make it as a gender-equal profession. Research from Dr Tamlynne Meyer however, found that at the most senior levels of the profession, notably the partnership level, women comprise only 28% of partners compared to their male counterparts. She said there were at least two male partners for every female partner.There is at play a leaky pipeline which sees women enter the legal field but they don't always make it to the top as the years go by. This phenomenon is common across industries and geographies alike. Affirmative action is the only way to support women law professionals and South Africa has been making great strides is doing so.
