Women form nearly half of the world’s population; however, they continue to remain underrepresented in almost every aspect of life and work. Be it access to basic rights & opportunities or presence in positions of power; women continue to get the shorter end of the stick.
Ample research has been conducted to prove that women’s empowerment and upliftment can have a compounding positive impact. Not only will it improve women’s lives, but will also strengthen communities and businesses alike.
A key path to empowering women in by bringing them into decision-making roles, be it in the political sphere or business-world. Women’s diverse perspectives can help strengthen business outcomes and improve a region’s economic output.
In 2023, only two countries in the region were able to achieve 30 percent gender quota for women in the parliament. Jamaica, was at the heels of achieving this feat, coming in at 29 percent.
The island nation of Jamaica has been striving hard to improve women’s representation in leadership roles and has taken several steps in the right direction. Programs such as the Young Women in Leadership (YWiL), Caribbean Women in Leadership (CIWiL), Women's Parliamentary Caucus etc are steps in the right direction.
