Editha Thalia Desiree: Redefining Legal Leadership At The Intersection Of Governance & Growth

Editha Thalia Desiree
Chief Legal & Compliance Officer

Indonesia’s legal profession is undergoing a quiet but meaningful transformation. As regulatory frameworks become more complex and businesses operate within increasingly interconnected markets, legal leadership has evolved beyond technical interpretation into a strategic function that shapes governance, risk, and institutional credibility.

Within this shifting landscape, women are emerging as influential stewards of trust, aligning legal rigor with commercial realities and long-term value creation. It is against this backdrop that Editha Thalia Desiree, Chief Legal & Compliance Officer of PT Zurich Asuransi Indonesia Tbk and Country General Counsel of Zurich Indonesia, has built a career defined by depth, adaptability, and purpose.

From an early age, her intellectual curiosity gravitated toward disciplines rooted in exploration and structure. Interests ranging from archaeology to linguistics reflected an early inclination toward analysis and discovery. Law ultimately became her chosen path, shaped in part by her mother’s unfulfilled aspiration to pursue a legal career.

After completing her undergraduate studies, she began her career at a boutique law firm before moving on to leading law firms in Indonesia. A pivotal chapter followed with the pursuit of an LL.M. in Singapore, where she also gained experience working at a Singaporean law firm.

Exposure to two distinct legal jurisdictions broadened her perspective and strengthened her interest in corporate law, particularly the opportunity to work closely with businesses and support strategic decision-making.

This focus led her into the insurance sector through a multinational general insurance company in Indonesia. The intersection of legal expertise and commercial judgment proved both challenging and rewarding. Over time, her professional trajectory consistently emphasized positioning legal and compliance functions as strategic enablers.

Her subsequent in-house legal and compliance roles at organizations including AIG, Manulife, AIA, Bank Ekonomi (a subsidiary of HSBC) further deepened this approach. Across banking and insurance, she strengthened governance frameworks, navigated regulatory complexity, and served as a trusted business partner.

Since 2020, her leadership role within the Indonesian General Insurance Association has extended her influence to an industry-wide level, where she contributes to regulatory development aligned with international best practices.

Recognitions as one of Indonesia’s most outstanding women in the financial sector and governance awards in 2024 and 2025 under her leadership underscore a sustained commitment to integrity, excellence, and positive change. Let’s get to know more.

My leadership is guided by integrity, accountability, sound judgment, partnership, and leading by example

How do you position the legal and compliance function as a strategic partner in advancing Zurich Indonesia’s business objectives and enabling sustainable long-term growth?

I see legal and compliance as integral to both business operations and strategic decision making. In a highly regulated financial environment, my role is to ensure every business action aligns with applicable laws while remaining commercially effective.

By translating complex regulations into practical guidance, I help enable sustainable growth. Strong governance and consistent compliance build trust with regulators, partners, and customers, forming the foundation of long term success.

Could you briefly introduce Zurich Insurance and outline your key responsibilities? How do you ensure global standards are effectively aligned with Indonesia’s local regulations and business realities?

As Chief Legal & Compliance Officer of PT Zurich Asuransi Indonesia Tbk, and Country General Counsel and Chief of Compliance for Zurich Indonesia, I lead all legal, compliance, and governance matters across Zurich’s operations in Indonesia.

My role involves providing strategic advice to the boards and leadership team on regulatory, corporate, and commercial issues, strengthening compliance frameworks, managing legal risk proactively, and fostering a strong culture of integrity across the organization.

I also work closely with regulators and key stakeholders to ensure regulatory alignment, support sound decision making, and enable sustainable growth.

As part of Zurich Insurance Group, my responsibility in Indonesia is to translate Zurich’s global principles and standards into practical, locally compliant actions. This requires careful consideration of Indonesia’s regulatory environment, market maturity, and specific business realities, while remaining aligned with the Group’s global expectations.

From a business perspective, my focus is to position legal and compliance as trusted advisors rather than control functions. By embedding compliance into every aspect of the business, including product development, digital initiatives, and strategic partnerships, I help ensure the organization remains agile, competitive, and accountable.

This approach allows Zurich Indonesia to create long term value for stakeholders while operating with integrity and contributing meaningfully to the Group’s continued success in the local market.

What core principles shape you as a legal leader, and as a woman in a senior executive role, how does Zurich Indonesia foster an inclusive environment that enables women to develop, advance, and step into leadership positions?

My leadership is guided by integrity, accountability, sound judgment, partnership, and leading by example. I see legal leadership as strategic, not purely technical, requiring clear advice, business understanding, and a commitment to developing people through trust, ethics, and continuous learning.

At PT Zurich Asuransi Indonesia Tbk, we actively empower women through initiatives like the Female Leadership Acceleration Group, mentorship, and flexible working arrangements. By fostering psychological safety and merit-based growth, we enable women to build confidence, advance into leadership, and shape the organization’s future.

Reflecting on your extensive professional journey, what guidance would you offer to women aspiring to grow into leadership roles?

I have learned that leadership is built through resilience, integrity, and sound judgment rather than titles or milestones. Growth is rarely linear and demands adaptability, continuous learning, and principled decision making.

I believe leadership is about responsibility, credibility, and consistency. To aspiring women leaders, I would say focus on substance before visibility, build deep expertise, and trust your competence. Define success on your own terms, stay authentic, act with purpose, and lift others as you progress.
