The role of in-house legal leadership is no longer just about safeguarding the company from compliance risks in today’s fast-evolving tech and regulatory environment. Legal leadership now significantly impacts the resilience of global organizations. One of the new-age legal leaders embodying this change is Essi Rimali, Group General Counsel, Vice President and Global Head of Legal and Compliance at HARTING Technology Group.
Essi’s journey was spurred on by a strong moral compass and academic brilliance, but it was the intensity of elite legal practice that inculcated discipline in her and honed her instincts. After undergoing rigorous training at a law firm, she went on to play senior in-house roles within international corporations. Essi’s 20-year long global career, which also involved a major move to Switzerland, has been instrumental in her becoming a legal leader who is not only adaptable but also strategic with a broad view of business risk and opportunity.
Essi currently heads the overall legal and compliance department at HARTING Technology Group, a globally active technology group providing connectivity solutions for electrification, digitalization and application areas such as mobility, data centers and sustainable energy. Her leadership approach focuses on empowering others, believing in them, and creating teams that can succeed even when they are on their own.
Tell us about your career journey and the key areas of your legal expertise?
I have always excelled academically, so pursuing a legal career felt natural. Driven by a strong sense of right and wrong, I saw the legal profession as a way to contribute meaningfully while navigating life with confidence. As a woman, I also valued law as a career where competence defines success. I began at a top-tier business law firm, where high standards taught me discipline, hard work, and grit.
I then held senior legal roles in multiple international companies, Logitech, Japan Tobacco International (JTI) and Nokia Siemens Networks gaining exposure to corporate law, governance, M&A, capital markets, multi-jurisdictional commercial and technology contracts, IP litigation, regulatory lobbying, competition law, data privacy, employment law, and more. My experience spans the full lifecycle of large global companies, equipping me to lead global legal affairs. I currently head the global legal department for HARTING Technology Group in Switzerland.
Introduce us to HARTING Technology Group and your role as Group General Counsel and Head of Legal & Compliance?
HARTING Technology Group is a leading manufacturer of data and power connectors, operating at the center of global megatrends like electrification and digitalization. An 80-year-old family company with a global presence in nearly 40 countries and close to 7,000 employees, HARTING Technology Group combines heritage with international reach.
I lead the global legal and compliance department, managing all legal partners and covering corporate housekeeping and governance, commercial contracts, M&A, new market entries, IP litigation, product liability, employment law, sanctions, and trade compliance. My role goes beyond legal oversight; it is focused on leadership and supporting the business. As part of the management team, I collaborate with other leaders to shape company strategy, making the work both dynamic and rewarding.
How does your legal team partner with the business to balance risk and enable growth?
Ongoing dialogue with the business is essential to understand priorities and determine how legal can best support them. Being part of the management team and engaging in continuous conversations provides strong visibility into opportunities, risks, and how different pieces connect.
I view legal as a communicator and connector across departments, balancing risk mitigation with enabling growth. This requires clear analysis: breaking down risks, evaluating worst-case and probable scenarios, estimating their cost, and determining mitigation strategies. We then assess these against business opportunities and communicate them effectively so informed decisions can be made.
Well-calculated risk is key to growth; zero risk kills opportunity, while breaking the law is never an option. Lawyers help navigate the space in between, showing not just what cannot be done, but how things can succeed. This approach defines true business partnership.
How is the role of in-house legal teams evolving today?
The legal field is becoming increasingly complex, with unpredictable global regulations and geopolitical developments. As a result, legal teams are receiving more questions, needing to provide more advice, and being expected to deliver it faster. To meet these demands, leveraging legal technology and AI is essential. It allows teams to work more efficiently and enables lawyers to focus on high-value matters that require their expertise.
The future in-house leader must have a holistic, strategic perspective: a strong understanding of global trends, the ability to respond quickly to geopolitical and regulatory shifts, and continuous collaboration with leadership and business teams.
What key milestones define your journey and what guides your leadership philosophy?
I’m grateful my parents encouraged me to study law in the capital, giving me early international exposure and valuable networks. My university thesis, completed with a law firm to support an active court case, won several awards and was published in a respected legal journal, opening doors to top law firms after graduation.
Fifteen years ago, I moved to Switzerland for my spouse’s work and established myself professionally through strong in-house roles in international companies. Over time, I built a global network via professional associations and frequent speaking engagements. I am passionate about contributing to the legal community locally, across Europe, and globally.
Leadership, to me, means empowering and mentoring others, fostering sustainable teams, supporting growth, and promoting diversity and inclusion. Effective leadership involves delegating with trust, guiding teams, and ensuring impact endures even in one’s absence. Perhaps due to my family entrepreneurial background, I’m very commercially driven and very much enjoy being part of the business and strategic decision making, stepping on other fields beyond strictly legal scope where I see an opportunity to advance business.
