Kavita Ajay Upadhyay
Group Chief Financial Officer

Women leaders are redefining the role of the Chief Financial Officer, transforming it from a function centered on financial stewardship into one that drives strategic growth, operational excellence, and organizational resilience. Today's CFOs are expected to navigate complex business environments, manage enterprise-wide risks, enable digital transformation, and contribute to long-term value creation. Women occupying these leadership positions are bringing a balanced perspective that combines financial discipline with collaborative leadership, governance, and business innovation. Their growing presence in executive leadership reflects the increasing recognition that diverse perspectives strengthen decision-making, foster sustainable growth, and build organizations that are agile in the face of evolving market dynamics.

Among these accomplished leaders is Kavita Ajay Upadhyay, Group Chief Financial Officer at Computech, whose career exemplifies the evolving responsibilities of the modern finance executive. An ACCA-qualified finance professional, she has built a distinguished career on a strong technical foundation complemented by progressive leadership across audit, commercial finance, healthcare operations, and multinational business management.

Kavita began her professional journey in audit, where she developed expertise in financial reporting, statutory compliance, risk assessment, and internal controls across diverse industries. This experience established a disciplined approach to governance and financial management that continues to underpin her leadership philosophy. She later transitioned into industry, assuming end-to-end responsibility for finance within a growing organization, where she strengthened capabilities in treasury management, financial operations, and performance management.

Her leadership expanded further during her tenure in the healthcare sector, where she successfully integrated finance with operations. She led initiatives involving facility establishment, systems implementation, process design, and operational optimization, reinforcing her belief that financial leadership must be closely aligned with business execution.

Today, as Group CFO at Computech Limited, Kavita leads financial strategy across multiple countries in East Africa while overseeing finance, human resources, operations, and shared services. By consistently embracing responsibilities beyond traditional finance, she demonstrates how modern CFOs can serve as enterprise leaders, shaping strategy, driving operational excellence, and creating sustainable value across the organization. Let’s hear more from her.

Looking back on your career, what accomplishments are you most proud of, and how have they shaped your perspective as a finance executive?

I am most proud of building strong financial structures that have supported sustainable business growth across multiple countries. Throughout my career, I have strengthened financial reporting, working capital management, liquidity planning, and performance frameworks that improved visibility, accountability, and execution. One of my defining achievements was leading the end-to-end operational setup of a healthcare facility, where I established systems, processes, and controls that transformed the organization into a fully operational business. Beyond finance, I have focused on creating scalable structures that enhance collaboration and organizational effectiveness. These experiences have shaped my belief that a modern CFO must do far more than oversee financial performance; they must drive strategy, strengthen operations, and create long-term value across the entire enterprise.

Finance leaders often have a unique view of an organization's strengths and vulnerabilities. What insights have you gained about building financially resilient businesses?

I believe financial resilience is built on discipline, foresight, and adaptability. Strong governance, effective internal controls, and proactive cash flow and liquidity management provide the foundation for sound decision-making. However, resilience extends well beyond financial metrics. I have learned that organizations with efficient processes, capable leadership, adaptable operating models, and a culture of accountability are far better equipped to navigate uncertainty. Diversification across markets and maintaining flexible cost structures also strengthen long-term stability. For me, resilience is not simply about protecting the business during challenging times; it is about creating the agility to respond quickly to change, seize new opportunities, and continue delivering sustainable growth regardless of market conditions.

As Group CFO of Computech, how do you transform financial information into actionable insights?

As Group CFO, I focus on turning financial data into meaningful business insights that support timely and informed decisions. I go beyond traditional reporting by using executive dashboards, forecasting, performance metrics, and scenario planning to identify trends, risks, and opportunities. My objective is not just to present numbers but to explain what they mean for the business and how they should influence strategy. Since my responsibilities extend across finance, operations, human resources, and shared services, I work closely with leadership teams to ensure financial insights translate into measurable business outcomes. I see finance as the bridge between strategy and execution, enabling decisions that align performance, people, operations, and long-term organizational objectives.

How important is stakeholder confidence, and what role does transparent financial communication play?

Stakeholder confidence is essential to building a successful and sustainable organization. I believe transparency and consistent communication are fundamental to earning the trust of shareholders, lenders, regulators, employees, and business partners. Clear reporting on financial performance, strategic priorities, risks, and opportunities allows stakeholders to make informed decisions while reinforcing confidence in leadership. Today, organizations are evaluated not only on financial results but also on governance, execution capability, and operational excellence. I have found that open communication strengthens credibility, improves collaboration, and builds lasting relationships. When leaders consistently demonstrate accountability, integrity, and transparency, they create a culture of trust that supports long-term growth and organizational resilience.

"The modern CFO is no longer simply a steward of financial performance; they are a driver of enterprise transformation, operating at the intersection of strategy, execution, people, and performance"

Could you share a demanding experience from your career and the lessons it taught you?

One of the most challenging experiences in my career has been balancing rapid business growth across multiple markets while strengthening the governance, controls, and operational processes needed to sustain that expansion. It required making difficult priorities, collaborating across functions, and maintaining alignment among leadership teams operating in diverse environments. This experience reinforced the importance of structured decision-making supported by accurate, timely information. It also highlighted how essential clear communication is for managing expectations and keeping teams focused during periods of change. Most importantly, I learned that sustainable growth depends not only on financial discipline but also on strong people, efficient processes, and the ability to execute strategy consistently across the organization.

How do you encourage adaptability, continuous learning, and future-readiness within your finance teams?

I encourage adaptability by fostering a culture of curiosity, accountability, and continuous improvement. I invest in professional development, promote cross-functional collaboration, and create opportunities for my team to gain broader business exposure beyond finance. I believe today's finance professionals must combine technical expertise with commercial awareness, operational understanding, and strategic thinking. I encourage my teams to contribute ideas, challenge conventional approaches, and take ownership of outcomes. By empowering individuals to embrace change and expand their capabilities, I help build agile and resilient teams prepared for future challenges. Continuous learning is not just about acquiring new skills; it is about developing the mindset needed to support business transformation and long-term organizational success.

What message would you like to share with the next generation of women aspiring to leadership roles?

My message to aspiring women leaders is to believe in your abilities, keep learning, and never hesitate to step beyond your comfort zone. A strong technical foundation is important, but confidence, resilience, and the willingness to embrace new challenges are equally essential. I encourage women not to limit themselves to traditional functional roles, as some of the greatest opportunities come from taking on broader leadership responsibilities. Seek mentors, build meaningful professional networks, remain open to feedback, and stay committed to continuous growth. Leadership is built through integrity, consistency, and delivering results over time. With determination, courage, and the right mindset, there are no limits to what women can achieve in leadership.
