Could you share details about your educational background and your professional journey so far?

I am a lawyer by profession, having earned my law degree from the University of Zambia, I was later admitted to the bar to practice . My passion for dispute resolution led me to pursue a Master of Laws in Dispute Resolution at the University of Cape Town, marking a shift from traditional legal practice. Since then, I have built a career as a dispute resolution practitioner, with extensive training from Edwards Mediation Academy (USA), ADR Center (Italy), and the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution at Pepperdine University (USA). My commitment to honing my skills and building a global network culminated in being awarded the prestigious Weinstein JAMS Fellowship, allowing me to engage with one of the world's largest alternative dispute-resolution organisations. This achievement is a highlight of my professional journey, defined by a dedication to innovation in dispute-resolution.

I’m a pioneer, my commitment to quality has built my reputation and led to positive referrals

Could you walk us through your professional journey as a legal expert and highlight the key areas of expertise you have developed as a dispute resolution practitioner?

My legal journey has been shaped by a desire for work-life balance and a passion for mental health. After being admitted to the bar, I initially planned to pursue a corporate career but joined the government and went through extensive training under an esteemed judge. Over five years, I honed skills in legal research, analysis and adjudication, but a gnawing discontent with the inefficiency of court processes led me to alternative dispute resolution (ADR). A Masters degree in Dispute Resolution deepened my commitment to faster, cost-effective solutions. I partnered with the founding partner of a reputable law firm to establish Zambia’s only ADR-focused law firm, Valerie and Partners. Today, I’m one of Zambia’s few full-time ADR practitioners.

Can you tell us about Valerie & Partners and the key roles and responsibilities you undertake as the Managing Partner?

Valerie and Partners, based in Lusaka, Zambia, is the first law firm in the country to specialize in alternative dispute resolution (ADR). As Managing Partner, I have shifted the firm from traditional litigation to focus on cost-effective, time-efficient pre-litigation solutions through negotiation and mediation. We help clients avoid the financial and emotional costs of litigation by resolving disputes in areas like employment, corporate relationships, and contracts, often achieving settlements within weeks. Our approach gives clients control over outcomes, reducing reliance on unpredictable court rulings. Leading a skilled ADR team, we provide advisory services and strategies that support smooth business operations.

What motivated you to pursue a career in the legal field?

My inspiration to pursue law comes from growing up in a middle-income family where my father, despite limited resources, prioritized education and encouraged me to speak up for myself. As the youngest of five, I felt a responsibility to help others find their voice. Initially driven by a passion for justice, I later realized that justice isn't only achieved through litigation— mediation and negotiation also empower individuals to advocate for themselves. These alternative dispute resolution methods give people control over their outcomes, motivating me to continue pursuing ADR as a powerful tool for justice.

What has been your guiding philosophy for leadership success, and what principles and ethics do you follow in your daily professional life?

My mantra is to stay authentic to myself. Following my passion and values has allowed me to pursue a unique career path in my country. I live by Shakespeare's 'To thine own self be true,' which gives me the courage to follow my dreams, even when no one else is. I also believe in excellence and always giving my best. Though results may take time, consistency leads to success.

The journey of a business leader is filled with challenges. Can you share some of the significant obstacles you face in your current role and how you navigate through them?

I believe leadership starts with building strong relationships, as trust and loyalty are essential for inspiring and guiding others. Treating people with kindness, dignity, and respect creates an environment where team members feel valued and are more open to new ideas and direction. My leadership style aligns with my introverted and peaceful nature; I focus on authenticity, clear communication, and collaboration. I don’t believe in forceful or antagonistic methods; instead, I lead by presenting the best version of myself and listening to others’ perspectives. By staying true to my values and leaning into my strengths as a communicator and visionary, I’ve found that people are more willing to align with my vision and goals. This approach allows me to create a respectful, effective, and motivating workplace where everyone feels empowered to contribute.
