In an exclusive interaction with Global Woman Leaders, Nekeisha Persaud enlightens us about her journey and leadership traits.

Take us through the formative years of your life and the early influences that shaped you as an individual?

My early years were shaped by a strict upbringing in a traditional East Indian household, deeply rooted in culture and discipline. My parents emphasized structure, and my involvement in classical Indian dance instilled further discipline and formality. These influences played a key role in shaping my values and character.

Tell us about your educational journey. What motivated you to take up law?

From a young age, I dreamed of becoming an attorney in Guyana, despite coming from a family deeply rooted in business. While my parents encouraged a business-focused path, I wanted to carve out my own journey. In secondary school, I tailored my studies to align with law, psychology, and business. After excelling in my exams, I applied for business and law programs at university. A faculty interview led to my immediate acceptance into law school, setting my legal career in motion. The journey wasn't without challenges. Unlike many peers with legal family backgrounds, I lacked access to resources and felt discouraged. At one point, I even enrolled in an MBA as a backup plan. However, I persevered, simultaneously completing my law degree and MBA, graduating in 2016. Entering the legal field, I faced struggles, particularly as a young professional in a male-dominated industry. But I maintained discipline and resilience, I overcame these challenges, eventually opening my practice and pursuing further legal studies, including a master's in oil and gas law.

Introduce us to Pete’s Real Estate. What are the key roles and responsibilities that you shoulder as the Director of the firm?

Pete's Real Estate is a family-owned business established by my father before 1990. I started learning the business at 18, gradually taking on responsibilities until becoming a director in my 20s. After nearly five years in banking, I returned to real estate, integrating my legal expertise into operations. As director, I oversee contracts, compliance, and administrative functions, ensuring adherence to evolving laws, particularly in areas like money laundering regulations. My role involves refining legal documentation, improving client and employee agreements, and streamlining processes. By merging legal insight with business strategy, I help to drive the firm's growth and efficiency.

As a business leader, how do you approach high-stakes decision-making?

High-stakes decision-making requires both independent analysis and guidance from experienced mentors. While I conduct my research and form my perspectives, I always cross-check with senior professionals to ensure I'm on the right path. Experience, alongside knowledge, is a key to making sound decisions. I also value employee input, as different perspectives contribute to well-rounded solutions. Leadership, to me, is about listening, adapting, and leading by example. Flexibility in navigating challenges and fostering a collaborative environment helps build trust and drives positive outcomes for the business.

By Merging Legal Insight With Business Strategy, I Help To Drive The Firm's Growth & Efficiency

What are some of the biggest wins you have achieved in your professional journey and what is your success mantra?

One of my greatest achievements is completing my studies with distinction, and meeting the goals I set for myself. Professionally, my work has been recognized through performance-based bonuses, including a record 6.25-month bonus higher than any previous manager. Additionally, my legal expertise gained trust over time. Initially, external attorneys' opinions were prioritized, but as my contributions proved equally valuable, my insights became the primary reference.

My success mantra as a leader is persistence, never letting failures or setbacks discourage me. Challenges are inevitable, but they shape growth and resilience. I’ve faced moments of doubt, yet pushing through led me to accomplish goals I once thought impossible. Self-reflection is key; sometimes setbacks are learning opportunities. Life isn’t meant to be easy every challenge must be met with dignity and grace. Rest when needed, and keep moving forward. Success comes to those who persevere with patience and determination.
