What led you to foray into HR? Could you highlight your core expertise and some of the most defining moments in your professional journey?

Growing up with limited career exposure, I was always driven by a strong desire to support and uplift others. This passion for people naturally guided me toward HR, where I could bridge goals with employee aspirations, fostering both business success and meaningful workplace experiences. Throughout my career, I have specialized in HR strategy, talent and change management, ensuring that company cultures align with business objectives. This expertise has allowed me to lead impactful workforce transformation efforts, building dynamic and high-performance teams across multiple industries. Over the course of my nearly three-decade-long career, I have navigated pivotal transitions into executive leadership, which proved to be transformative. This shift allowed me to craft business frameworks that integrate commercial acumen with a deep focus on organizational culture and people-driven success.

Seeing people grow and reach their full potential gives me such joy

Tell us about your role as Executive Director (HR & Transformation) at MAN Automotive South Africa. What are the key focus areas of your leadership in the organization?

As the Executive Director, I hold a strategic leadership role overseeing key HR functions and transformational initiatives. I also serve on the local Board of Directors for MAN Automotive SA Pty Ltd, carrying fiduciary responsibility for all MAN entities in South Africa, including production facilities for buses and trucks, a part distribution centre, and a national sales organization. Additionally, I oversee HR for MAN Financial Services.

My primary focus is on strengthening talent pipelines through succession planning and enhancing employee value proposition to foster long-term engagement. With retention being a key priority, my role ensures maintaining a sustainable and engaged workforce that drives organizational performance even during these uncertain times.

In my role, I drive transformation that embodies diversity, equity, inclusion, and cross functional collaboration to strengthen our organizational culture. With the industry undergoing a major shift, my focus remains on building an agile, forward-thinking workforce prepared for the future.

As an HR leader, which fundamental principles do you leverage to successfully implement HR transformations?

As industries undergo significant change, workforce transformation remains central to HR leadership. Technological disruptions, evolving employees’ priorities, and shifting market conditions require agile strategies to drive organizational success.

As HR leaders, we must navigate our workforce through change by fostering clarity, inclusivity, and accountability. A successful transformation requires that employees feel valued, supported, and aligned with the organization’s vision through transparent communication and shared objectives, where feedback is key for all involved.

Moreover, inclusive leadership empowers employees by valuing diverse perspectives, fostering engagement, and strengthening alignment. Guiding organizations through transformation demands empathetic leadership. By fostering a supportive and people-centric approach, organizations can navigate transitions with resilience and adaptability.

How are workforce transformations and strategic HR initiatives reshaping the business landscape in the transportation and automotive sectors?

As the automotive industry evolves with AI and electrification, transformation initiatives are critical to building agile and innovative teams. By promoting cross-functional teamwork, HR strategies fuel innovation and efficiency across the value chain. These efforts are redefining the business landscape by enhancing agility, integration, and long-term growth. To navigate industry shifts, we prioritize reskilling and continuous learning, fostering agile teams and leadership. A culture of continuous learning, innovation, and technological advancement ensures productivity and relevance in the automotive sector.

Which career milestones have been the most significant in your professional journey? Which guiding principles have contributed to your success?

Pursuing executive education at INSEAD, IMD, and Stanford Business School has been instrumental in refining my leadership approach. Beyond my senior role in HR, my experience spans from being in various boards as a non-executive director for over 18 years including chairing HR and Remuneration Committee, Social and Ethics Committee in other organizations outside my sector which allows me to give back what I have learnt over the years in my field and as a senior executive.

For me, success is rooted in humility, the ability to remain open to learning, unlearning, and evolving. True leadership requires setting the standard, embracing change, and fostering a culture where continuous development is the norm. I believe that thoughtful communication is essential to leadership. Equally important are the core values that guide my success, including integrity and honesty, enabling trust across all levels of an organization and driving meaningful change with credibility and influence.

How do you foresee the evolution of HR transformation in South Africa and beyond?

The HR landscape is advancing more rapidly than ever today, with technology enabling tailored employee experiences while also tackling wider societal challenges. One of the key priorities is the shift toward continuous learning and professional upskilling to close skills gaps, hence skills development is becoming critical. Employee experience is becoming central, with personalized approaches to benefits, learning and career development. In SA, regulatory compliance remains a focus area. Looking beyond South Africa, AI and Automation is helping HR professionals to spend less time on routine tasks and spend more time on strategic topics. Employee well-being is critical now than ever. Hybrid work model where applicable will become standardized than expected. Skills-based talent acquisition will replace old traditional role based hiring to list a few.
