Zoey Mkabela: A Pioneer In Wellness Biotechnology And Hair Restoration

Zoey Mkabela
Founder

Women leaders in the wellness biotechnology industry are redefining the intersection of science, innovation, and personal transformation. By turning lived experiences into impactful solutions, they are not only advancing wellness and beauty but also empowering individuals to embrace confidence, self-care, and authenticity. These visionary entrepreneurs are proving that some of the most meaningful innovations emerge from personal challenges, creating brands that resonate deeply with people seeking both results and reassurance.

One such inspiring leaders is Zoey Mkabela, Founder of Volumicious, whose entrepreneurial journey is rooted in resilience, scientific expertise, and an unwavering commitment to helping others. What began as a personal struggle soon evolved into a purpose-driven mission that has transformed the lives of thousands of women.

In 2016, Zoey experienced telogen alopecia, a form of hair loss triggered by pregnancy and stress. During one of the most difficult periods of her life, losing her hair significantly affected her confidence and self-image. Like many women across Africa, she relied on wigs to conceal the problem, until she made a life-changing decision - to stop hiding and start searching for a solution.

Drawing on her scientific background and research experience at the University of Stellenbosch, Zoey revisited a project involving a plant compound linked to hair loss in newborn lambs. Determined to restore her own hair, she applied her knowledge to develop a solution that delivered extraordinary results. Within a year, her hair had grown dramatically, proving that she had discovered something truly remarkable.

What started as a personal quest to regain confidence soon became a powerful business opportunity when other women experienced similar transformations. Building Volumicious from the ground up without external funding, Zoey relied on determination, discipline, and her own resources to grow the business. The company's first major funding support arrived only in 2023 - seven years after its inception - highlighting the strength and sustainability of the foundation she had already established.

Today, Volumicious is a multi-award-winning hair wellness brand recognized for its innovation, impact, and commitment to empowering women. Most recently, Zoey was honored with the prestigious Icon of Africa Award, celebrating outstanding leaders who are creating meaningful change across the continent. With its signature purple brand identity symbolizing power, excellence, beauty, life, and restoration, Volumicious has become far more than a haircare brand - it is a symbol of hope, empowerment, and self-belief. Through science-backed innovation and a deep understanding of customer needs, Zoey continues to redefine hair wellness while inspiring women to embrace their confidence and unlock their full potential.

Let's hear more from her journey and vision.

What are the key strategies that helped you establish strong brand credibility and customer trust in such a competitive market?

The biggest factor behind our credibility has been results. Women could visibly see that the products worked across different hair types, including Afro hair, relaxed hair, dreadlocks, Caucasian hair, and Indian hair. Real transformation built trust organically.

Another important strategy was empowering others through distribution opportunities. I created a strong network of resellers who became both entrepreneurs and brand ambassadors. This expanded our reach while also creating economic opportunities for women.

My sales background also played a huge role. I stayed close to customers, built relationships directly, and listened to their needs. People trust brands when they feel personally connected to them. We also strengthened our visibility through radio interviews, national television appearances, billboard advertising, exhibitions, and social media promotion.

For me, impactful leadership is about empowering people and creating opportunities that uplift communities. I believe a true leader helps others grow into the best version of themselves while leading with purpose and compassion

Additionally, our hair clinics in Johannesburg gave us direct interaction with customers, allowing us to provide personalized hair wellness services alongside our products. All these efforts together helped establish Volumicious as a trusted and accessible brand.

As a leader featured under the project “CEO from South Africa 2026,” how would you define impactful and future-ready leadership in today’s evolving business landscape?

For me, impactful leadership is about empowering people and creating opportunities that uplift communities. I believe a true leader helps others grow into the best version of themselves while leading with purpose and compassion. Future-ready leadership goes beyond innovation and profitability; it focuses on creating sustainable social impact. Entrepreneurship should address challenges such as unemployment, inequality, and poverty. When communities are empowered economically and socially, hope increases and societies become stronger. I believe leadership should leave a lasting impact that transforms lives and creates opportunities for future generations.

How important is emotional connection in building a loyal and lasting customer community within the beauty industry?

Emotional connection is extremely important. Customers want to feel understood and valued. For me, staying close to customers and genuinely listening to their struggles has been essential.

What draws many people to Volumicious is not only the products but also the story behind the brand. People relate to my journey - from struggling in poverty and dealing with hair loss to building a successful company that now creates opportunities for others. That story gives women hope.
