  • Twelve women were awarded "Construction Stars" for pioneering the gender role in Sri Lanka's construction sector.
  • The occasion underscored a call for gender-sensitive development and greater prospects for women in the industry.

Alongside the patronage of the German Crafts Chamber (HWK of Frankfurt – Rhein Main), the Chamber of Construction Industry Sri Lanka (CCI) identified 12 outstanding women as Construction Stars at a ceremony held in Waters Edge.

These women have been stamping their trailblazing efforts in a profession traditionally held by men. Industry stakeholders and decision makers were also among the gathering who participated during the event conveying a strong message i.e., Sri Lanka's construction industry is evolving and women are taking it forward.

Chairman of the Construction Industry Development Authority of Sri Lanka, Chief Guest Prof. Chandana Jayalath addressed the emphasis of the government on gender-inclusive growth with a message of policies empowering women in construction. He stated, “The future of our economy and our industry depends on diversity”, while discussing ways to provide more opportunities to women as architects, engineers, quantity surveyors, and environmental scientists.

Honoured in a gala event, these 12 winners were those professionals who have broken stereotypes through their ability. Their testimonies have proved women to be succeeding in various functions i.e., from project management to green design.

In a statement, Chamber of Construction Industry President, Architect Jayantha Perera said,“These women are not participants; they are inspirations. Their success sets the benchmark for others to follow.”
