  • €100B+ global opportunity driving women-focused health innovation
  • New network unites pharma, research, and public sectors in Turku
  • Women’s health equity fuels economic growth and social impact

Finland has taken a bold move towards redefining the world of women's health with the opening of Women's Health Hub Finland in Turku, a vibrant public-private network dedicated to driving innovation in female-centered healthcare solutions. Organized by Business Turku, this ambitious effort brings together leading pharmaceutical and diagnostics corporations, top scientists, and public sector collaborators to address long-neglected health issues facing women globally.

Despite women making up half of the world's population, women’s health has not been addressed with the same even-handedness as men’s health, with less than one percent of research and development funding historically committed to diseases that affect females (under that same category of female-specific diseases and not including cancers). This hub is a kick back against that inequity with potential to achieve transformational health outcomes for women, as well as unlock multibillion-euro export and investment potential.

"Women's health is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world, and our aim is to take on this demand directly," Business Turku's Jyrki Lehtimäki explains. The project provides a platform for disruptive innovation across fields from reproductive health to antenatal care and menopause care ultimately enhancing quality of life and access to treatment for women globally.

Several established industry leaders including Bayer, Orion, Roche, and Revvity have joined forces with top research institutions: the University of Turku and Turku University of Applied Sciences. The combined efforts of these organizations enable scientific breakthroughs to become reality within operational healthcare environments.

This health centre not only enriches women's lives, it also supports Finland's overall export and investment policy. Health equity has the potential to create up to €1 trillion of global economic value by 2040, Business Finland estimates.

Based in Turku, Finland’s pharmaceutical powerhouse, which accounted for more than 50% of Finland's pharma and diagnostics industry, the hub is now spreading nationally and internationally.

"Turku has the collaborative mindset, global-class skills, and vision to spearhead this transformation," states Mayor Minna Arve. Focused on innovation, impact, and inclusion, Women's Health Hub Finland initiates a new era of world-class women's health leadership.
