In 2024, the Kansas City Current partnered with fashion Rental Company Nuuly and United Way of Greater Kansas City to support young women in the local community through a fashion-focused initiative. The NWSL club, co-owned by Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Mahomes, donated nearly 100 designer dresses to help young women access outfits for special occasions.
The initiative benefited 60 members of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, giving them an opportunity to choose dresses while encouraging confidence, individuality and self-expression. The event aimed to create a positive experience where participants could feel appreciated and celebrated.
Announced on October 2, 2024, the collaboration brought together sports, fashion and community organizations at the Boys & Girls Clubs' Thornberry Unit. Through the partnership, the Kansas City Current and its partners highlighted the importance of supporting young women and creating meaningful opportunities beyond sports.
Key Highlights:
was able to comb through almost 100 donated designer dresses to pick out outfits for homecoming and other significant events.
There was also a DJ, an interactive flower bar and a photo backdrop, which added an extra element that made this feel more like a special shopping event than a standard charity giveaway. A celebratory addition of sparkling grape juice.
This event was also attended by three KC Current players. Forward Nichelle Prince, defenders Hailie Mace and Gabrielle Robinson assisted the girls in learning about various styles and choosing their favorite dresses.
Designer outfits provided by Nuuly, sponsors of the club's Match Day Arrival. At the time the subscription scheme for renting clothes had over 250,000 subscribers across the country.
On-site alterations were another key component, and were provided by United Way of Greater Kansas City. Clothes that were not collected were stored on the Thornberry Unit and other club members benefited from this.
The organizers wanted the evening to be more than just an opportunity to give away clothes. Selection of attire for a big day might be able to assist in the youth expressing themselves for an important event.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the Kansas City Current, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City and United Way of Greater Kansas City to help bring this memorable experience to life for these young women,” said Kim Gallagher, Nuuly Executive Director of Marketing and Customer Success. “At Nuuly, we believe in the power of clothing to inspire confidence and create special moments. It’s an honor to contribute to such a meaningful event.”
Jason Roth, president and CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City, also highlighted the impact of the initiative.
“This collaboration with the Kansas City Current, Nuuly, and United Way of Greater Kansas City means so much to the young women we serve,” said Jason Roth, president and CEO, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Kansas City. “It’s about more than just receiving a dress – it’s about building self-esteem, encouraging self-expression, and creating unforgettable memories. We’re thankful to our partners for creating such a meaningful experience that uplifts and empower women.”
For Patrick and Brittany Mahomes, the initiative also reflected the Current's connection with Kansas City beyond the football and soccer fields. Their club's involvement showed how professional sports organizations can use their platforms and partnerships to create meaningful opportunities for local families.
