The Kansas City Current has turned its success on the football pitch into support for women’s heart health, donating $50,000 through its “Goals for Heart” campaign. The initiative links every goal scored by the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team to funding for cardiovascular care, connecting sporting achievements with a wider community cause.
The donation was made on March 14, 2026, through United Way of Greater Kansas City, the Current’s exclusive charity partner. The funds support the Adelaide C. Ward Women’s Heart Health Center and its CardioScore programme, which provides cardiovascular disease screenings for women.
Key Highlights:
Under the campaign, CPKC Stadium contributes $1,000 for every goal scored by the Kansas City Current. The team’s 50 goals during the 2025–26 season therefore generated $50,000 for the latest contribution. The donation builds on the programme’s previous fundraising efforts, taking the campaign’s total contribution over two seasons to $110,000.
According to the University of Kansas Health System, the funding has helped provide free cardiovascular screenings to 1,300 women, with additional screenings planned. The initiative focuses on early detection, particularly because cardiovascular disease can remain unnoticed until more serious symptoms emerge. Greater access to screening can help women identify potential risks and seek appropriate medical guidance.
The campaign also demonstrates how women’s sports can support community health initiatives beyond the field. By tying each goal to a specific donation, the programme creates a direct connection between the team’s performance and its social impact.
The Kansas City Current’s ownership has also played a role in the club’s growth and community engagement. Brittany Mahomes became a co-owner when the club was founded, while Patrick Mahomes joined the ownership group in January 2023. His investment made him the first active NFL player to hold an ownership stake in an NWSL team. Chris and Angie Long are also co-owners and co-founders of the club.
The Current plays its home matches at CPKC Stadium, a $325 million venue that opened in 2024 as the first stadium purpose-built for a women’s professional football team. The venue has become part of the club’s broader efforts to connect women’s sport with community initiatives.
Through “Goals for Heart”, each goal carries significance beyond the scoreboard. While the campaign’s seasonal structure links funding to team performance, its impact demonstrates how professional women’s sport can help direct attention and resources towards important public health needs.
