By: Global Woman Leader Team | Thursday, 8 October 2026

The Government of Seychelles, in partnership with the African Union (AU) Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security, officially launched the Seychelles National Action Plan (NAP) on Women, Peace and Security 2026–2030 on October 7, 2026. The two-day program is being held in Mahé, Seychelles, from October 7 to 8.

The launch marks an important milestone in Seychelles’ efforts to advance the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) Agenda and strengthen the role of women in peace building, conflict prevention, security and decision-making. The program also includes a capacity-building workshop aimed at strengthening national expertise and institutional capacity to implement the action plan effectively.

It is Seychelles first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. The adoption marked Seychelles' 38th AU Member State to have a national action plan focused on the WPS Agenda. The development also adds to the AU's activities to support the implementation of the WPS Agenda at national and regional level in Africa.

Key Highlights:

  • Seychelles launched its first National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security for 2026–2030
  • The plan makes Seychelles the 38th AU Member State to adopt a national WPS action plan
  • The two-day program focused on strengthening women’s role in peace, security and decision-making

The two-day program will aim to mark Seychelles's contribution to the implementation of the WPS Agenda, and build political and institutional momentum for its implementation. It facilitates discussions among stakeholders on the priorities of the action plan and reinforces the national mechanisms needed to implement the commitments in the action plan into action.

The Women, Peace and Security Agenda is based on the recognition that women play an important role in preventing and resolving conflicts, maintaining peace and building resilient communities. It also urges inclusive and increased representation of women in peace and security decision making and increased action to safeguard women and girls affected by conflict and insecurity.

The capacity building aspect of the program is anticipated to assist stakeholders in the implementation of Seychelles’ new action plan. Building the knowledge, coordination and institutional capacity will be crucial to ensure the commitments in the NAP are incorporated into national policies and programs.

The official launch also helps to establish political momentum in support of the implementation of the plan. The Government of Seychelles and the AU Office of the Special Envoy on Women, Peace and Security are collaborating to support Seychelles in its quest to advance the WPS Agenda.

Seychelles is one of the countries in Africa to have a National Action Plan for the promotion of women's contribution to peace and security (2026-2030). It also upholds the country's pledge for the localization of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda in the continent.
