Women have long been central to South Africa’s social and economic progress. In 1956, 20,000 women marched to Pretoria’s Union Buildings to challenge discriminatory pass laws, becoming a powerful force in the struggle that ultimately contributed to the end of apartheid.

Nearly seven decades later, that spirit remains strong. Women continue to shape the nation’s development, although determination has not yet translated into equal representation. Despite comprising more than half the population, South African women experience higher unemployment and lower workforce participation than men.
