A surge of women leaders has arisen in Guatemala who are determined to transform the social, economic, and environmental realities. These women have the courage to defy the status quo and participate in the co-design of system responses to root causes of inequality and poverty. In Guatemala, women are engaged in a broad array of sectors, including social entrepreneurship, sustainable development, education, public policy, and health. They are collectively creating their businesses to produce economic opportunities for others, building and leading organizations to create more access to quality education, and informing public policy discussions to advocate for rights and gender equality. Women are embodying their lived experiences and cultural heritage to underpin their solutions to ensure they are effective. They are also grounding their work in the local and creating solutions with global relevance. Local solutions can be seen in the following examples of leadership like leading artisan cooperatives, directing NGOs, or managing development programs.
Regardless of the area of focus, the women of Guatemala are dedicated to their social advice with vision and purpose, empathy, and resilience. The fact that distinguishes this movement is the collaborative approach that many of these women are committed to. Many use community building, empowerment, and sustainability as core paradigms of their leadership approach which might be only uplifting themselves, but they are also paving pathways for the next generation of leaders, especially girls and young women from indigenous and marginalized populations. Given systemic inequities that afflict much of the country, the ascendance of women leaders connotes resistance, but also renewal. Their narratives set the scene for what inclusive leadership stands for and the development of equitable neighborhoods where life can go on in resilient ways. As these women lead moving forward, they are imagining new ways forward for Guatemala, in a way that supports dignity, opportunity, and impact for the longer haul.
