In Myanmar, women in the business, education, civil society, and government sectors are taking the lead and assuming leadership positions. There are women who hold transformative leadership positions, having crossed over traditional and cultural barriers as well as institutional barriers. Over the years, the number of senior-most women in the government and private sectors has grown enormously because of several factors. They reach out from different domains, carrying with them their cherished lived testimonies, hard work, and determination, covering a broad spectrum of issues ranging from community empowerment, health, education, to financial inclusion. Supposedly, women-led is now changing micro financing, health systems, social enterprises, and development agencies to better support disenfranchised people.
Women leaders in Myanmar also engage significantly in peace building, conflict resolution, and advancing human rights and social justice in some of the most challenging and politically repressive environments that exist in the world today. These women leaders practice collaborative, empathetic, and visionary leadership while juggling their family, community, and work responsibilities in community development. Further barriers relating to gender bias and constrained women's access to leadership development are some of the barriers to women's leadership and engagement in political development in this politically unstable context.
