Innovation in sustainability is based on a paradigm that considers long-term perspectives. Rather than treating the problem independently, the industry is adopting a holistic framework that views the circular economy, waste management, assessment, carbon footprint, and digital product passports. Industry leaders are striving to transform companies from a reactive compliance model to a proactive leadership model by leveraging holistic models. This not only strengthens the environment but also builds long-term sustainability of the business.
Measuring success by the effectiveness of knowledge translation into real and lasting results, Cansu Mayaoğlu Akın designs and implements innovative solutions that help industries optimize resource use and minimize environmental impact. With a strong focus on environmental sustainability, her work covers circular economy models, waste management systems, clean and eco-efficient production, and industrial symbiosis within ecoindustrial parks.
She works with a strong emphasis to support organizations in sustainability reporting, carbon and water footprint analysis, life cycle assessment, environmental product declarations, digital passports, and compliance with border carbon adjustment mechanisms. Cansu Mayaoğlu’s goal is to bridge technical expertise with strategic insight and create sustainable value for the industry and environment alike.
What inspired you to pursue a career in environmental sciences?
My educational and professional journey into the field of environmental science evolved through continued education, as opposed to any specific turning point. Throughout my academic experience, my interest has grown in understanding the relationship between natural processes, natural resource efficiency, and human activity as it relates to environmental and business impacts.
One of the major turning points in my professional trajectory occurred when I recognised that environmental issues go far beyond being purely technical. I understood that they are inextricably linked with economic, social, and governance structures, and that they can be made scalable and sustainable using scientific approaches based on data.
"My personal leadership style is rooted in evidence & clarity"
Tell us about your professional journey in the industry. What core areas of specialization have you developed over the years?
My work experience has been a mix of practical applications in academia, consulting, and industry projects. Thus, from my work experience, I have acquired in-depth skills and knowledge in areas concerning carbon footprinting for corporate and product life cycle assessments and water footprint analysis. I also specialise in ESG sustainability reporting, green transformation roadmaps, and environmental impact assessments for industrial processes.
An essential aspect of my work relates to applied sustainability projects, which range from life cycle analysis, carbon footprint, waste, clean productions, to circular economy-related projects. Through my experiences, I have developed a strong skill to translate scientific knowledge into problem-solving technologies that answer the needs of industries.
What inspired you to co-found PRONGEN. tech? What are your primary roles and responsibilities as the Co-Founder?
Prongen.tech was founded in response to a recurring challenge I observed across industries. Despite access to strong technical sustainability knowledge, many companies struggle to operationalize it into actionable, data-driven solutions that align with their strategic objectives. The company operates at the intersection of engineering. analytics, and sustainability strategy.
As Co-Founder, I oversee technical methodology development, ESG and sustainability framework design, strategic project management, and R&Dfocused programs. I rest my role on mentoring and capacity building, reflecting my belief that sustainable impact is achieved through both implementation and continuous knowledge sharing.
What are some of the most pressing challenges you encounter in your current role? How do you approach and overcome them effectively?
One of the biggest challenges that I often face is the view that sustainability is a cost-driven function rather than a source of value. The bridging of the gap that exists between short-term financial drivers and long-term environmental and economic outcomes can be achieved by communication and collaboration.
My personal leadership style is rooted in evidence and clarity. Showing both the value and the way of change is a big part of both increasing trust and reducing resistance to change. I encourage interdisciplinary team-building, skills development on an ongoing basis, and a situation where technical and strategic sophistication form together.
How do you foresee frameworks such as the EU Green Deal, CBAM and Digital Product Passports reshaping industrial sustainability practices?
For me, these developments mark the beginning of a new paradigm for businesses and how they compete and generate value. Now that the EU Green Deal is on the table, it is no longer a question of whether businesses can and should be more sustainable – it is now an imperative.
In the near future, there will be an emergence of data being at the forefront. CBAM is encouraging organisations to be more open and accountable about their emissions. Digital Product Passports are set to bring this data to the forefront of product development.
Looking back, what key achievements are you most proud of? What is your personal philosophy or ‘success mantra’?
One of my most meaningful achievements has been translating academic insight into actual on-ground impact. At Prongen.tech, I have helped to bring about measurable sustainability transformations at the core of industrial organizations, with outcomes that surpass textbook hypotheticals into the very operational heart of businesses.
At the core of my work lies a very simple philosophy: creating knowledge is crucial, but applying it to real transformation marks success. Sustainability, I believe, delivers value only when it is embedded within an organization's decision-making processes.
