Dr Laura Viban: Fostering Global Learning & Lasting Educational Impact

Dr Laura Viban
Director

The education system in Congo-Brazzaville has evolved through various historical phases, shaped by its colonial past and subsequent independence. Despite notable progress, the sector continues to face several obstacles, including inadequate infrastructure, a shortage of qualified teachers, and limited resources. Rural areas, in particular, struggle with accessibility, leading to significant disparities that hinder national development.

However, the impact of these challenges is gradually diminishing, owing this progress to passionate educationalists like Dr Laura Viban. Her career began at the British Council, which eventually led her to serve as the Director of the American International School of Brazzaville (AISB), where she has been instrumental in advancing educational excellence in the region.

Dr Laura’s contributions have earned her numerous accolades, including an Honorary Doctorate in Education from Maryland State University at the World School Summit in Dubai and the Transformational Leadership Award. She has also been recognized among the 100 Most Inspiring Entrepreneurs by African Excellence & Personality Award (ACEPA) in Ghana and received the 3rd Africa Outstanding Professionals Award in Tanzania. She is a nominee for multiple prestigious awards in 2025, including the 4th Africa Outstanding Professionals Awards in Gambia and the African Excellence & Personality Award in Ghana.

Global Woman Magazine had the privilege of speaking with this esteemed educational leader about her journey, the evolution of AISB, and her vision for the future of education in Congo.

What key influences shaped you and inspired your path in education?

Growing up in a family of educators, I was immersed in a culture of learning, integrity, and perseverance. My parents, both teachers, prioritized education despite our modest background, shaping my values and leadership approach.

Excelling in school, I naturally gravitated toward teaching, earning a bachelor's in English and Mass Communication, followed by a master's in applied Linguistics. My professional journey started at the British Council, where I taught English, and that ignited my passion for teaching. Later, I transitioned to international education at the American School of Douala in 2003, a pivotal moment that allowed me to explore the diverse world of education.

To deepen my expertise, I pursued an American Teaching Certification, a second master's in Education, and later a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Management. My journey took me from Germany to the American International School of Brazzaville, where I now serve as Director. Seeking continuous growth, I got certified in School Management and Leadership at Harvard School of Education and Business.

Education is my lifelong calling, and I remain committed to fostering excellence, innovation, and inclusivity, ensuring students and educators thrive together.

An educator’s impact extends beyond the classroom, it shapes communities, drives change, & builds a better future

Tell us about AISB and your role as Director.

The American International School of Brazzaville is a close-knit community of about 120 students from kindergarten to 12th grade, delivering high-quality international education since 2012. Accredited by the Middle States Association (MSA) in 2017, we later adopted the International Baccalaureate (IB) program and are now an authorized IB World School, offering the Primary Years, Middle Years, and Diploma Programs alongside the American High School Diploma. Since our first graduating class in 2019, we have maintained a 100 percent university acceptance rate, with students enrolling in top institutions worldwide.

As Director, I lead the school’s strategic vision, oversee academic programs, and foster faculty development. I also manage financial operations, accreditation processes, and community engagement, ensuring the school's sustainability and growth.

What teaching methodologies and tools drive student success at AISB?

At AISB, we prioritize 21st-century skills, blending traditional and modern methods to create a dynamic, student-centered environment with flexibility and personalized instruction. This approach was crucial during COVID, ensuring seamless remote learning and sustained student engagement.

We have a framework that emphasizes the Four Cs, namely communication, critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration to equip students with essential skills for success.

Project-based learning at AISB enhances teamwork and problem-solving through real-world applications, while technology integration supports research, interactive learning, and communication. Adaptive learning tools personalize learning experience, while gamification keeps students engaged.

Beyond academics, social-emotional learning fosters resilience, empathy, and self-awareness. Regular formative assessments and constructive feedback guide student progress, promoting a growth mindset and allowing for personalized instructional adjustments.

As an IB School, we emphasize inquiry-based learning, encouraging curiosity, independence, and a love for lifelong learning. Global collaboration projects, including Model United Nations and cultural exchange programs, expand students’ perspectives and prepare them for a globally connected world.

What challenges do you face as an educator, and how do you overcome them?

Leading an international school in Brazzaville presents complex challenges, from fostering inclusivity in a diverse community of 40 nationalities to managing resource limitations and teacher recruitment in a primarily French-speaking region. We address these by implementing multicultural programs, sourcing materials strategically, and offering competitive benefits to attract quality educators. Infrastructure issues, such as unreliable electricity and internet, require continuous investment in backup systems.

Additionally, the transient nature of our student body necessitates strong orientation programs and community-building initiatives. Economic fluctuations also impact enrolment, which we mitigate through flexible payment plans and active outreach. Through strategic planning and community engagement, we create a thriving learning environment.

What milestones define your journey, and what is your success mantra?

Throughout my journey as a director, I take pride in key milestones that reflect a commitment to excellence. A major achievement has been fostering student academic success which is seen through our students' continuous progress in assessments like the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests.

Over the years, our institution has experienced steady enrolment growth, with ongoing professionals' development. We have also embraced modern pedagogical approaches to enhance student engagement and achieved financial stability which has been crucial in sustaining our programs despite challenges.

Diversity and inclusivity remain at the heart of our school culture, with initiatives that celebrate our multinational student body, such as our annual International Day, where students showcase their heritage with pride.

High teacher retention is a key milestone, with many educators staying for seven to ten years. Our focus on support and community ensures continuity and stability in education.

If I were to define my success mantra, it would be to inspire and empower students and staff to reach their full potential while instilling a love for learning and a commitment to excellence. This philosophy has been central to our achievements and the lasting impact we continue to create within our school community.
