Faridah: Engineering Change, Powering Growth

Eng. Faridah Odhiambo
CEO

Across Africa, a quiet industrial shift is underway - one led by women who are steadily redefining how business, engineering, and manufacturing are imagined and executed. In spaces once considered rigidly male-dominated, they are stepping into leadership roles with a blend of technical depth, strategic clarity, and executional discipline that is reshaping industrial outcomes.

From engineering firms to large-scale manufacturing environments, these leaders are not only driving innovation and operational growth but also strengthening the foundations of Africa’s industrial future. Their influence extends beyond organizational success, creating pathways for the next generation of engineers, innovators, and industrial thinkers across the continent.

Among these influential leaders is Eng. Faridah, the Chief Executive Officer of Plenser Limited, a Kenya-based engineering and manufacturing company specializing in industrial heating solutions, incinerators, and waste management technologies.

With a background in mechanical engineering, she brings a unique combination of technical expertise, strategic thinking, and business leadership to the manufacturing sector. Under her leadership, Plenser has positioned itself as a key contributor to Africa’s growing industrial self-reliance agenda. Recognizing the importance of localized production, Eng.

Faridah has championed initiatives that strengthen local manufacturing capacity while reducing dependence on imported industrial equipment. Her commitment to innovation, research, and customer-focused solutions has enabled the company to develop products that meet both industrial demands and environmental standards. Let’s hear from her.

My technical training continues to guide my decision-making and helps me approach leadership with a practical, solution-oriented, and collaborative mindset

How is Plenser contributing to Africa’s shift toward localized production, and what is your long-term vision for the company within Kenya’s evolving manufacturing landscape?

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the vulnerability of global supply chains and made it clear that Africa must strengthen its capacity for self-reliance. At Plenser, this reality pushed the company to act decisively. In 2020, when imports were severely disrupted, the company established local manufacturing of incinerators to ensure continuity of supply.

Since then, Plenser has expanded into boiler manufacturing and has continued to build local capacity in raw material sourcing, human resource development, and technical design. This approach is aimed at strengthening resilience and contributing meaningfully to Africa’s broader industrial self-sufficiency.

My long-term vision for Plenser is to grow beyond Kenya and establish a strong global footprint. We aim to manufacture industrial boilers and related engineering solutions not only for the African continent but also for international institutions.

To achieve this, we are actively pursuing strategic partnerships and collaborations that can enhance our market reach, accelerate growth, and strengthen our capability for large-scale industrial manufacturing.

Ultimately, the goal is to position Plenser as a globally competitive engineering and manufacturing company rooted in African innovation and industrial excellence.

How has your engineering background influenced your leadership approach?

My background in mechanical engineering has had a strong influence on my leadership approach. It has equipped me with critical thinking skills, structured analysis, and a disciplined way of solving problems strategically.

Engineering has also taught me that solutions are rarely straightforward; they often require engaging different stakeholders, negotiating effectively, and building consensus. These experiences have shaped how I manage a manufacturing enterprise, especially when dealing with complex operational challenges.

Overall, my technical training continues to guide my decision-making and helps me approach leadership with a practical, solution-oriented, and collaborative mindset.

How do you drive innovation and continuous improvement?

I actively gather customer feedback and integrate it into our research and development process to ensure our solutions remain relevant and effective. Our R&D team brings together members from sales, finance, and technical departments to support holistic problem-solving.

We also invest in technology adoption, including AI tools, market research, and competitor analysis to stay ahead of industry trends. For me, innovation is closely tied to understanding customer needs and ensuring our products evolve with the market.

How is Plenser integrating sustainability into manufacturing?

Sustainability is central to my approach to manufacturing at Plenser. I ensure that we design equipment in line with environmental regulations, use recyclable and reusable materials, and develop air pollution control systems for emission treatment.

We also educate our customers on environmentally responsible usage. For me, sustainability is not an add-on but a core part of our engineering and production philosophy.

As a woman CEO in a male-dominated industry, what leadership principles guide you? What message do you have for future industrial leaders?

I have always led as a CEO first, not defined by gender, because delivering value is what builds credibility. My leadership is guided by teamwork, stakeholder engagement, effective negotiation, and the ability to integrate diverse perspectives. These principles have helped me build trust, foster collaboration, and achieve consistent results in a traditionally male-dominated industry.

I believe the future belongs to those who are courageous enough to pursue their vision. Africa has immense potential in resources, talent, and innovation, and it is our responsibility as leaders to transform that potential into real industrial growth and global competitiveness.
