Gerda Oberholzer: Empowering Africa Through Skills Development & Transformational Leadership

Gerda Oberholzer
Founder

In today’s rapidly evolving business environment, organisations across Africa are placing greater emphasis on workforce development, leadership adaptability, and sustainable growth. As industries continue to navigate digital transformation, changing compliance landscapes, and emerging workforce challenges, the role of education and skills development has become increasingly important in shaping resilient and future-ready organisations.

At the forefront of this transformation are leaders who are redefining how organisations approach learning, talent development, and professional growth. Gerda Oberholzer, Founder of GEOFunda Training and Development is such leader whose career has been deeply rooted in education, organisational development, and people empowerment. With more than three decades of experience in training, accreditation, and workforce development, she has built a reputation as a respected specialist committed to creating meaningful learning opportunities that positively impact individuals, organisations, and communities.

Driven by a strong belief that education should do more than simply transfer knowledge, Gerda has dedicated her work to building practical, industry-aligned learning solutions that help organisations remain competitive while empowering individuals to realise their full potential. Through GEOFunda Training and Development, she continues to champion innovation, skills recognition, leadership growth, and sustainable organisational development, helping businesses and professionals adapt and thrive in an increasingly dynamic and technology-driven world. Let’s hear from her.

What motivated you to establish GEOFunda Training and Development, and how has the experience influenced your leadership philosophy?

After spending more than three decades in education, training, and organisational development, I recognised a widening gap between industry expectations and traditional learning models. Many organisations were struggling to align skills development with operational realities, compliance requirements, and the changing needs of the modern workforce. That inspired me to establish GEOFunda Training and Development with the vision of creating more than just a training provider. I wanted it to become a strategic partner that supports organisations through workforce development, accreditation, compliance, leadership growth, and skills recognition in a practical and sustainable way.

Building GEOFunda has shaped my leadership approach profoundly. Entrepreneurship has taught me resilience, adaptability, and the importance of collaboration. My leadership style today is strongly people-centred and solutions-driven, with a focus on long-term impact rather than short-term success.

My MBA research on emotional intelligence and leadership further reinforced my belief that leadership today is no longer defined solely by technical expertise. In an increasingly digital world, empathy, communication, adaptability, and human connection have become essential leadership qualities that drive both organisational growth and meaningful workplace engagement.

How do you define the vision and mission of GEOFunda Training and Development in advancing skills development and organisational transformation across Africa?

My vision for GEOFunda Training and Development is to become a transformative force in education, skills development, and organisational excellence across Africa. Our core mission is to deliver innovative, industry-aligned, and future-focused learning solutions that support workforce readiness, professional development, and organisational sustainability. I strongly believe learning should extend beyond theoretical knowledge and create practical, real-world impact.

Empower People, Embrace Innovation, And Lead With Purpose

At GEOFunda, we focus on creating pathways that connect education with workplace application, helping individuals unlock their potential while enabling organisations to grow through innovation, leadership, and continuous skills development.

How do RPL, CPD, accreditation, and customised training contribute to creating future-ready organisations and stronger workforce performance?

At GEOFunda Training and Development, I see these elements as essential for building agile and future-ready workforces. Recognition of Prior Learning helps individuals gain formal recognition for existing skills, while enabling organisations to identify and unlock valuable talent within their teams.

Continuous Professional Development ensures professionals remain relevant in rapidly evolving industries shaped by technology and compliance changes. Accreditation strengthens credibility, quality assurance, and industry trust.

I also believe customised training is critical because every organisation faces unique challenges. Tailored learning solutions align directly with business objectives and operational needs, ultimately helping organisations become more resilient, productive, competitive, and sustainable.

What guidance would you share with organisations and professionals seeking to strengthen their approach to skills development and leadership growth?

My advice is to view skills development as a long-term strategic investment rather than a business expense. I believe organisations that continuously invest in people, leadership capability, emotional intelligence, and workplace culture are the ones that will remain sustainable and competitive.

I also encourage organisations to prioritise human-centred leadership, because while technology continues to evolve, qualities such as empathy, communication, collaboration, and resilience remain essential for long-term success.

For professionals, lifelong learning is no longer optional. Adaptability, curiosity, and continuous growth are critical in today’s rapidly changing workplace. Most importantly, organisations must create environments where people feel empowered to learn, contribute, and grow.

Reflecting on your professional journey, which accomplishments stand out the most, and what guiding philosophy continues to shape your leadership style?

One of my proudest achievements has been building GEOFunda Training and Development into a trusted strategic partner in education, accreditation, and workforce development. Seeing individuals gain confidence through Recognition of Prior Learning and helping organisations grow through impactful learning strategies has been deeply rewarding. My leadership philosophy is rooted in integrity, empathy, innovation, excellence, and people-centred leadership. I believe true leadership is about creating lasting impact and empowering others to succeed.
