Take us through the formative years of your life and the most impactful experiences that shaped your journey in finance.
My academic journey in economics began in Bulgaria and included an exchange year at Switzerland’s University of St. Gallen. A formative internship at United Bulgarian Bank inspired my enduring interest in banking and the financial industry. Working at the establishment of one of the first Swiss internet bank start-up, I gained practical experience in multiple banking areas within a small yet versatile team.
Tell us about your professional journey that shaped your expertise in the industry.
I was with the Zurich Invest Bank, Switzerland from 1998 to 2004. As COO and Executive Committee Member, I gained experience in establishing a start-up, and in growing the business through innovation. From 2004 to 2006 I worked with St. Galler Kantonalbank. I joined as Head of Management Support for Private Banking, where I strengthened compliance, optimized IT systems, and supported strategic growth.
Serving as a Head of Operations at the HSBC Guyerzeller Bank from 2006 to 2010 was a further step in my professional life. During a major merger, I managed the operational integration, ensuring continuity and trust during a time of significant change.
I then joined the Rothschild & Co Bank where I worked from 2010 to 2021. At Rothschild & Co, I faced the challenge of multi-jurisdictional complexity. Balancing efficiency with compliance across Switzerland, the UK, and the EU became my hallmark.
Between 2021 and 2024, I worked with Schroder & Co Bank as Head of Service Centre Wealth Management and Executive Board Member. I headed Operations, IT, projects, ensuring seamless service for private clients and family offices, and lead the migration of Operations to a new core banking platform.
Introduce us to MBaer Merchant Bank. What are your primary responsibilities as the Chief Operating Officer?
MBaer Merchant Bank is run by entrepreneurs for entrepreneurs, for their businesses and their families. We offer first-rate tailored solutions, relying on the input we receive from our clients. We represent the perfect combination of experience and expertise, if it can be done, we can do it.
We are deeply rooted in the Swiss banking tradition and, with our head office located in the heart of Zurich's financial center, we are globally connected.
In my role as Chief Operating Officer, I am responsible for driving operational excellence, scaling main processes, strengthening governance, and enabling the bank’s international business activities. Given the bank’s lean structure, I also look into governance, oversight, and performance monitoring of outsourced service providers, as well as driving key operational and transformation projects across the organization.
What operational or strategic challenges do you encounter in your current role? How do you address them effectively?
One of the most significant challenges in the financial industry is moving from trying out AI to true adoption and scale. Simultaneously, the sector is being presented with a range of strategic decisions related to the balance between insourcing and outsourcing at the smaller scale institutions. Another challenge, from an operational or information technology angle, is to balance cost discipline with growth through investments.
Strategist banking leader specializing in operations, IT, outsourcing, and regulatory change
The current strategic focus is thus based on continued evolution in our merchant banking business and, of course, looking ahead at the next phase. The core challenge is growing and creating new capabilities to serve clients better and establishment of a new line of business as well. The key to addressing and overcoming those challenges is to establish a growth strategy and consistently implement it, and aligning the team around the strategic direction.
How are emerging technologies and global regulatory shifts reshaping the future of operational leadership in wealth management?
The disruptive impacts of emerging technologies and a constantly evolving regulatory environment are radically altering the future of operational leadership. The use of AI has the promise of revolutionizing future operational practices thorough its ability to further add value in terms of efficiency-enhancing capabilities and quality improvement of data as well through its proactive approach to compliance.
In wealth management, the future of operational excellence is being presently rewritten due to the availability of technology and increased, complex demands from regulations. When it comes to cybersecurity matters, advanced analytics and automation technology has shown great potential in enhanced threat identification and protection of cyber threads. The future belongs to operating models that involve teams working alongside intelligent automation and AI bots.
Looking back, what key milestones are you most proud of? What is your ‘success mantra’?
Establishing a bank in a startup environment under a lean team was a key milestone in my career. This taught me a lot regarding a strong performance culture while preparing me for being accountable and delivering every day at my best.
Success in any field requires a strong performance, integrity in behaviour, and a long-term outlook. Leaders must inspire people through personal behaviour of staying committed to their principles, remaining impartial and independent in personal judgment, and focusing beyond mere execution on long-term vision. Finding and retaining the right people and empowering them is another aspect of my recipe for success.
