Rosena Yau: Redefining Legal Leadership for the Digital Age

Rosena Yau
Group General Counsel & Company Secretary

In an era where women leaders are reshaping the legal landscape with clarity, courage, and compassion, a new generation of trailblazers is redefining what it means to lead from the front. These women leaders view the law not just as a framework of rules, but as a dynamic force that can drive culture, empower strategy, and accelerate business transformation. Among these influential voices stands Rosena Yau, a global legal leader whose journey reflects both the resilience of her roots and the vision of her leadership.

Raised in Australia in a family where curiosity was a way of life, Rosena grew up watching her mother be a part of the legal profession later in life. This experience taught her early the power of reinvention and determination. Her father, a professor, nurtured her intellectual independence, grounding her in values that still guide her today.

In her current role as the Group General Counsel & Company Secretary at Global Fashion Group, Rosena embodies a leadership philosophy inspired by Warren Buffett’s belief that integrity, humility, and long-term thinking are non-negotiable. She champions a legal function that moves beyond risk management and transactional tasks to become a true business partner, agile, automated, and deeply embedded in decision-making.

Tell us about your professional journey in the field of law. Having gathered extensive international experience, what key areas of legal expertise have you developed over the years?

My career has spanned commercial law, technology, and compliance, allowing me to advise and partner on complex cross-border transactions, digital and operational transformations, and regulatory frameworks. Over time, I have learned that technical expertise alone isn’t enough, as great lawyers don’t just solve legal issues; they help solve business problems.

For me, that means offering solutions, not roadblocks, and often saying “yes, if…” by setting clear parameters that enable progress while managing risk. I have come to value the ability to cut through complexity, see the bigger picture, and build practical frameworks.

When legal takes a proactive leadership role alongside business partners, it drives growth, enhances operational efficiency, strengthens customer and supplier relationships and business performance and ultimately increases enterprise value.

The general counsel of tomorrow is a business strategist first, and a legal technician second

Introduce us to Global Fashion Group. What key roles and responsibilities do you shoulder as the Group General Counsel and Company Secretary?

At Global Fashion Group, we operate three major e-Commerce platforms across Latin America, Southeast Asia, and Australia–New Zealand. In my role, I see myself as a strategic business partner and enabler, working with the Board and leadership team to shape decisions that drive growth, performance and strategic outcomes across our global footprint.

I lead a team of over 25 professionals who enable the business to operate with speed, confidence and commercial clarity in a dynamic market. My focus is on creating conditions of growth and resilience, turning complexity into practical frameworks that accelerate decision-making and performance. By aligning data, process and accountability, I ensure that operational discipline drives opportunity, efficiency and long-term value creation.

What challenges do you encounter as a General Counsel? How do you approach and overcome them effectively?

The role of General Counsel is evolving faster than ever, and we are constantly navigating complex challenges across the business. Today, legal leaders are expected to deliver more value with fewer resources while managing the transformative impact of AI and digital innovation, a shift that’s both strategic and operational.

I believe the future of the legal function lies in reimagining how we work: leveraging data to show ROI, embracing automation, and building agile frameworks that enable speed without compromising compliance. Above all, legal must be viewed as a true business partner.

When commercial priorities and opportunities align with and leverage legal frameworks and governance best practices, they become catalysts for growth, efficiency, and resilience. Constraints are not obstacles; they are opportunities to innovate. The leaders who thrive will be those who turn pressure into progress.

The global legal landscape is rapidly evolving with digital transformation and AI integration. How do you see these developments shaping the future of corporate governance and compliance?

The global legal landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, where governance is shifting from a box-ticking exercise to a dynamic, data-driven discipline. AI will accelerate this shift by helping boards anticipate risk, act decisively, and embed compliance into everyday operations. But technology alone is not enough. Blind reliance on AI can undermine trust and resilience.

The future demands leaders who balance digital innovation with human judgment, ethics, and courage. It’s at this intersection where technology meets integrity that sustainable value and long-term enterprise strength will truly be built.

Looking back on your career, what key milestones are you most proud of? What is your personal philosophy or ‘success mantra’?

The achievements I am most proud of are not the technical wins or closed deals; instead, they are the moments when my team and I partner with the business to unlock opportunities that deliver tangible results for our customers, employees and investors.

In complex or high-pressure situations, choosing to lead with kindness and empathy consistency shifts the tone, accelerates alignment, and enables solutions that are both commercially strong and sustainable over time.

People are the true assets of any organisation, and leadership is about growing others, so they can deliver their best work for the business. Kindness isn’t weakness; it shapes culture, builds trust, and drives performance by creating the conditions for teams to move faster, take ownership, and innovate confidently.

My greatest pride is seeing my team flourish, and watching individuals step into their potential because they feel supported, respected and empowered to create outcomes that are a win for the business, our people and our shareholders.
