Ann Mbene: Redrawing HR Boundaries in Cross-Border Payment Ecosystems

Ann Mbene
Chief HR Officer

Leadership today is defined by adaptability, foresight, and a deep understanding of people and markets. In Africa’s rapidly evolving digital economy, this ethos is embodied by CXOs leading companies in the digital payments and gift card marketplace space, where they balance innovation, regulatory complexity, and customer trust while driving scalable growth across diverse markets.

Ann Mbene, CHRO at The Tonic Technologies, exemplifies this new generation of people-focused leadership. With a strong academic foundation in Human Psychology, she brings a deep understanding of human behaviour into the core of organizational strategy.

Her professional journey is further strengthened by globally recognized credentials, including the SHRM-CP certification from the Society for Human Resource Management and a Chartered Personnel Manager certification in Nigeria.

These qualifications have not only shaped her career trajectory but have also refined her ability to align human capital with business objectives.

At The Tonic Technologies, she plays a pivotal role in fostering a culture that supports innovation, adaptability, and performance. Her approach integrates structured HR frameworks with a nuanced understanding of employee engagement, enabling the organization to navigate the complexities of the digital economy.

Through her leadership, she continues to influence how modern HR functions evolve within Africa’s fast-growing fintech ecosystem.

What factors influenced you to choose a career in Human Resources?

During my early years, I developed a strong sense of responsibility and a natural inclination to understand people. Studying human psychology deepened my curiosity about behaviour, motivation, and environmental influence. This gradually evolved into a passion for building systems that deliver results while enabling individuals to reach their full potential. For me, HR goes beyond managing people; it is about creating sustainable structures where both organisations and individuals can grow and thrive.

Which core HR domains do you specialise in?

Over the years, I have built expertise across key HR functions, particularly organisational design and workforce planning, which I find engaging as they involve developing future leaders and ensuring continuity.

I also specialise in compensation and benefits, designing frameworks that attract and retain talent. In addition, I focus on performance management systems to optimise employee output, along with HR operations and policy development to strengthen long-term organisational effectiveness and support employee well-being.

Could you share an overview of Tonic Technologies and your responsibilities as Chief HR Officer?

The Tonic Technologies is a Nigeria-based fintech company recognised for its product, Cardtonic, offering digital payment solutions such as virtual dollar cards and gift cards that enable seamless international transactions across markets like Nigeria and Ghana.

As Chief HR Officer, I lead the end-to-end HR function, including talent acquisition, performance management, compensation design, and policy development, ensuring alignment between people strategy and the organisation’s long-term growth objectives.

My approach is anchored in three pillars: performance management, organisational structure, and sustainability

How do you create a dynamic work culture that drives employee growth and business success?

My approach is anchored in three pillars: performance management, organisational structure, and sustainability. I ensure employees have clear goals and consistent processes. I prioritise growth by defining structured career pathways, enabling employees to understand their progression.

I also emphasise engagement by fostering an environment where individuals feel valued, heard, and aligned with the company’s mission. This integrated approach strengthens both individual development and overall organisational success.

What challenges have you encountered in creating people-centric workplaces, and how have you addressed them?

One of the key challenges I have faced is balancing organisational priorities with employee expectations without compromising either. To overcome this, I focus on establishing clear policies, relying on data-driven decisions, and maintaining transparent feedback loops.

We continuously gather employee insights through surveys and feedback channels, even after implementation, to refine our approach. This ensures ongoing improvement while fostering a balanced, efficient, and people-focused work environment.

How do you see innovation influencing HR strategies, particularly in Africa?

The future of work in Africa and globally is increasingly shaped by technology and structured systems. Organisations are adopting data-driven HR practices with a stronger focus on flexibility, employee experience, and skill development.

I believe HR leaders must leverage technology and AI to enhance efficiency, build scalable frameworks for remote and hybrid models, and cultivate global talent pipelines. Creating structured yet adaptable environments will be essential for organisations to remain competitive in an evolving landscape.

What is your leadership philosophy, success mantra, and future vision for yourself and Tonic Technologies?

My leadership philosophy is centred on building enduring systems that outlast individuals, ensuring long-term sustainability and organisational growth beyond any single person’s involvement. My personal mantra is “onwards and forward,” as I view challenges as opportunities for learning and focus on long-term progress over short-term setbacks.

Looking ahead, I aspire to become a globally recognised voice in HR and contribute to shaping the future of work worldwide. For Tonic Technologies, the vision is to expand its reach and continue innovating in international payments to make global transactions more seamless and efficient for users.
