Take us through the early years of your professional journey.
I graduated with bachelor’s degree in Tourism, but transitioned into investment banking amidst early career challenges leading me to explore new opportunities. I was fortunate enough to foray into investment banking during the equity markets and IPO boom which proved to be very beneficial.
After completing my MBA, I built a 12-year career in the industry. Upon caring for my father following his ailment, I noticed gaps in hospital service delivery which led me to explore the integration of healthcare and hospitality through medical tourism.
My aim was to elevate the local hospitals to match international standards. I began leading quality accreditations to access and raise standards. In the process, I also became part of the Joint Commission International, ISO, and NABH.
As a person who is driven by positivity, I always look at problems and challenges as avenues to find solutions
Tell us about your professional journey in healthcare and medical tourism. What core specializations have you developed over the years?
From its very onset, medical tourism has been driven by delivering world-class treatments and services to international patients. Personally, I saw the gaps in this industry when I was looking after my father in the hospital. It brought a stark realization that processes can be made seamless, delivering better patient care.
Eventually, I became part of the Department of Tourism and also the Tourism Promotions Board, serving both national and international tourists.
Healthcare, by its nature, serves the entire population without discriminating against socioeconomic status. I became actively involved in patient safety initiatives with a focus on promoting equal treatment standards for all patients.
Introduce us to Digihealth, HealthCore and Time Medical System.
HealthCore sits at the center, defining the benchmark for quality and efficiency in healthcare. That foundation continues to shape my strategic approach across the institutions I serve. From consultancy and training, I transitioned to delivering technology-driven solutions through Digihealth that empower healthcare workers and patients.
Technological advancements can produce better outcomes while working alongside clinical expertise. Digihealth integrates hardware, software, and patient care to deliver end-to-end solutions. For example, our MRI system is powered by teleradiology and AI for timely interpretations sent back to providers and patients, thus reducing costs and enhancing efficiency.
Advanced technology should not be concentrated in large urban hospitals. In Digihealth, we introduce cutting-edge innovations even at the primary level of care and in the most remote areas. We make quality healthcare affordable and accessible to all. For me, this is what Universal Healthcare means.
What challenges do you encounter as a leader in the Philippines’ healthcare sector? How do you effectively address said challenges?
As a person who is driven by positivity, I always look at problems and challenges as avenues to find solutions. The timeless art of turning adversities and trials into triumphs is what I believe in.
From a business standpoint, Philippines is largely constrained with the way governance systems and regulatory processes operate. It is hard for entrepreneurs, especially women, to break into the market because of bottlenecks in procedures and compliance. However, continued efforts in the right direction help.
Another challenge is the efficient use of talent in a multigenerational workforce. With a pronounced shift in work culture, habits, and expectations, it is critical for leaders to lead with empathy and flexibility. The aim is to help our healthcare professionals adjust to the daunting tasks quickly for better results.
Going forward, how do you see healthcare technology and medical tourism evolving in the Philippines?
The Philippines has unexplored potential to elevate itself as a progressive nation in technology and science. Currently, the country faces the challenge of training and retaining health professionals who eye migrating to potential parts of the globe for better work opportunities.
Personally, I was fortunate to have gathered diverse technological and cultural exposure through international opportunities in the U.S., Europe, Asia and the UAE.
As a growing nation, we have to deal with lack of infrastructure and healthcare facilities due to high demand in the sector. We need to focus more on prevention than cure, reducing pressure on limited hospital resources. In my capacity, I want to improve the healthcare equity and access by leveraging technology in underserved areas.
Drawing lessons from your expansive journey, what advice would you give to aspiring women leaders?
It is worth to mention that the workforce in the healthcare industry comprises of women predominantly worldwide. But while women dominate in patient-facing, care-related roles like nursing and midwifery, women remain significantly underrepresented in senior leadership, executive positions, and decision-making roles within the sector.
Cases are largely driven by innovation and robust decision-making owing to the ever-evolving nature of this industry. Adapting and utilizing the latest technological advancements brings success and opportunities, where women can work as better facilitators and caregivers.
My advice is straightforward but hopefully impactful: learn the art of adaptability with grit and grace to unlock professional and personal growth.
