Among the prominent women leaders in Mozambique is Liana Cuambe, a testament to perseverance, hard work, and a relentless entrepreneurial spirit.
Liana Cuambe, the CEO of International Trading & Solutions, has a story rooted in determination and ambition. Liana’s journey began in a typical Mozambican household, where she was instilled with strong ethical values. Despite not coming from an affluent background, her drive to succeed was evident from a young age. At 19, Liana took her first job as a salesperson, despite having no prior experience. This marked the beginning of a career defined by an eagerness to learn and a desire for better opportunities.
Liana graduated in Computer Engineering from Gujarat Technological University, and her time studying both in Mozambique and India gave her valuable insights into the disparities between developing and developed nations. Recognizing the potential for business ventures that could uplift her society, she is pursuing an MBA in Artificial Intelligence to further broaden her expertise. After returning to Mozambique and gaining experience in the ICT sector, Liana made the bold decision in 2019 to leave her stable job and follow her entrepreneurial dreams, co-founding International Trading & Solutions. Through her leadership, she continues to innovate and pave the way for future women leaders in Mozambique. Let’s get to know more from her.
What motivated you to create International Trading & Solutions? Could you explain the foundational idea behind this venture?
My passion and dream of contributing to my society, modernizing and enhancing the quality of life in my community through technology, led me to pursue the business world. However, my ambitions extend beyond my field of expertise, which is why we decided to create a company name that would enable us to offer a wide range of solutions to address various market needs.
What matters most is staying true to my moral and professional values, especially since the business world can sometimes be unpredictable
As the CEO of International Trading & Solutions, what are the different roles and responsibilities you take on? What are the main areas you focus on to drive the company’s growth?
As CEO, I am responsible for making key strategic decisions that drive growth, from resource allocation to exploring new markets, mergers, and acquisitions. Our strength lies in the software development sector, where we provide customizable solutions for various national institutions. Recognizing another market need, we launched a brand called CONNECTING CX, which specializes in customer service. We design solutions and optimize strategies for businesses in both front-office and back-office services, including finance, billing, and technical support. We are among the first to offer Portuguese-language customer service solutions internationally. With the capacity to deploy 150 operators and offices equipped with cutting-edge technology, we implement high-level solutions tailored to each client. Additionally, we are expanding into the hardware market, offering devices such as self-service kiosks and computers, which are already available in the market.
The journey of a business leader is filled with challenges. What are some of the key obstacles you face in your current role, and how do you navigate them?
One of the biggest challenges I face is being a woman, particularly at my age, in a society where the business sector is predominantly male. Finding women in the ICT sector is still rare. However, these challenges serve as a source of motivation for me to keep going. What matters most is staying true to my moral and professional values, especially since the business world can sometimes be unpredictable.
What do you consider to be the biggest accomplishments in your professional journey so far? And as a leader, what would you say is your success mantra?
One of my biggest achievements to date is creating a significant solution that is currently in use by the public. While I cannot disclose the specific entity due to contractual agreements, it brings me immense satisfaction to know that our work is solving problems and making a tangible impact on the lives of Mozambican citizens.
As a leader and a Christian, my mantra is simple, ‘If God placed it in my heart, I can achieve it. And if I can do it, so can you!’.
How do you envision the business landscape in Mozambique evolving in the coming years? Are there any specific industry trends you’re particularly optimistic about for the near future?
I see a promising future for the market in Mozambique. The ICT sector here holds great potential, and compared to the international market, there is still much to be done. We are ready and capable of being a key player in the transformation and growth of Mozambique, as well as Africa, particularly in the customer service and software sectors.
