The dynamic African telecommunications landscape entails innovation and resilience as the ingredients of success and only few stories shine as bright as that of Nyaruai Muhoro, the Founder and Chief Commercial Officer, Infinity Tech Africa. Built on determination and a deep passion for communication, she is one of the pioneering women entrepreneurs driving digital connectivity within the continent.
Nyaruai’s journey from KTN's media floors to the tech corridors of Safaricom shaped her understanding of how communication drives business growth which ultimately set her on a course to carve her entrepreneurial path.
In 2016, Nyaruai founded Infinity Tech Africa, a telecommunications company, to provide bulk SMS, USSD, premium messaging along with software solutions to businesses across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and Ghana.
Her leadership came with its fair share of challenges, from staffing hurdles and cash flow pressures to the unspoken gender barriers that often exclude women from key decision-making spaces. Overcoming it all, the company has grown into a successful enterprise nearing its 10th-anniversary milestone.
How did your educational and professional journey lead to you founding InfinityTech Africa?
I hold a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, along with a Master’s in Business Management focusing on decision-making and operations, plus certifications in marketing, strategic planning, and operational management.
My career began in media sales at KTN (2002–2006), where I gained valuable insights into communication, business decision-making, and organizational dynamics. I later joined Safaricom, selling internet services and exploring the value-added services (VAS) space, which deepened my understanding of how businesses identify markets and make strategic choices.
This experience revealed how vital communication and technology are to modern enterprises, inspiring me to pursue entrepreneurship. In 2015, I began building Infinity Tech Africa, officially registered in 2016.
Today, InfinityTech provides telecommunication solutions to businesses across several African countries. As we approach our 10th anniversary, I believe that my journey was shaped by curiosity, adaptability, and a passion for helping businesses thrive through innovative connectivity solutions.
I live by the philosophy of striving for excellence and making a positive impact wherever I operate. Each of these milestones reflects that belief and the meaningful growth it has brought to both our company and community
Tell us about Infinity Tech Africa and your role as the Founder and Commercial Lead.
Infinity Tech Africa is a telecommunications company offering a range of communication solutions for businesses. Our core services include bulk SMS, which enables businesses such as banks, insurance companies, and other organizations to communicate effectively with their customers.
We also provide premium messaging services, where businesses can share information or content with subscribers. In addition, we offer USSD services. Alongside these, we provide software development tailored to business communication needs.
As the Founder and Commercial Lead, my role is to ensure that our services align with market needs, maintain our presence in key markets, and uphold our commitment to delivering reliable and effective communication solutions to our clients.
What challenges do you encounter as a business leader, and how do you overcome them?
Leading a growing business comes with several challenges. Staffing is a major one; finding and retaining the right people in a highly technical field is tough. Training takes time, and once employees gain expertise, they often move on, disrupting growth.
Thankfully, we’ve now built a stable, committed team that drives our success. Cash flow management is another hurdle. As a sole owner, I fund operations, infrastructure, and salaries before revenue flows in.
Managing expenses, negotiating supplier terms, and ensuring fair pay requires careful balance, especially with limited external funding. Delayed client payments also strain operations, demanding patience and persistence. Building trust with new customers in a competitive telecom market takes time and consistent service.
The pandemic added pressure with remote operations and productivity concerns. As a woman leader, I’ve faced subtle exclusion from informal business discussions, often limiting access to key opportunities and partnerships.
How do you see Africa’s digital transformation evolving? What role will telecoms play in it?
Africa holds immense potential for digital transformation, yet only about 40 percent of its population, – has access to data-enabled smartphones. While mobile phone use is widespread, limited access to data-enabled smartphones restricts full digital participation.
As technology advances and smartphones become more affordable, connectivity in rural areas will grow, expanding communication and market opportunities.
Earlier, banks relied on mobile apps or USSD platforms for engagement, but today’s improved access allows for seamless, real-time digital experiences. Innovation continues to create new possibilities, and it’s up to telecom players to build solutions that harness these advancements.
This ongoing evolution makes the telecommunications sector dynamic, offering vast opportunities for innovation, growth, and impact as Africa’s digital ecosystem continues to flourish.
Which professional milestones are you most proud of? What’s your success mantra?
One of my proudest milestones has been starting this business nine years ago and keeping it successfully running since; a rare feat, given how many businesses struggle to survive beyond their early years. Another key achievement is expanding our services across multiple countries.
Operating regionally in our industry requires national telecommunications certifications, which we’ve secured in several markets. This has enabled us to support larger corporate clients seamlessly across borders. Equally important is our commitment to nurturing young talent.
Every year, we bring in students for internships or industrial attachments, offering hands-on experience in telecommunications, especially empowering women to build their skills and confidence.
On the personal front I am a marathon runner and a ‘6 star general’ having run all the 6 Abbott World Marathon Major marathons, which has been a significant milestone.
I live by the philosophy of striving for excellence and making a positive impact wherever I operate. Each of these milestones reflects that belief and the meaningful growth it has brought to both our company and community.
