6K+ Women Attend Gombe Unity & Progress Summit

More than 6,000 women from across Gombe State gathered at the APC Square in Gombe on September 9th for the maiden Gombe Women’s Unity and Progress Summit, convened by Dr Zainab Jamil Gwamna. The event focused on strengthening unity and advancing opportunities for women across the state.

Held under the theme “Stronger Voices, United Women, Greater Impact,” the summit brought together women from all 11 local government areas and 13 Local Council Development Areas. Participants included entrepreneurs, professionals, community leaders, political stakeholders and women advocates.

The summit was organized to promote women’s empowerment, mentorship and unity while encouraging greater participation in governance and socio-economic development. It also aimed to create a platform for women to connect, support one another and contribute more actively to their communities.

Speaking at the gathering, convener Dr Zainab Gwamna said the initiative seeks to build a stronger and more united women’s movement in Gombe State. She emphasized the importance of women supporting each other and creating opportunities that can benefit younger generations.

“This summit is about bringing Gombe women together to discover our collective strength and understand that the success of one woman should open doors for another,” she said.

“We must mentor our young girls, support women in business and professions, strengthen our families and contribute meaningfully to our communities.”

Gwamna applauded the turnout, saying that it was a reflection of the potential of women to play a role in social and economic development.

She also applauded the programs being implemented by her husband, Dr Jamil Gwamna, on the ground, for the women and young people, while giving him high commendation.

The convener appealed to the participants to carry the lessons and relationships gained from the summit back to their communities with emphasis on mentoring young girls, skills acquisition, strengthening the confidence and making young girls economically self-reliant.

The wife of the Gombe State Governor, Dr Asma'u Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who also spoke, applauded the initiative, while commending the participation of women from all over the state.

She reiterated the state government's pledge towards implementing programs to enhance the welfare, empowerment and economic wellbeing of the youths and women population.

“Women are indispensable partners in the development of our families, communities and the state,” she said.

“I commend Dr Zainab Gwamna for bringing women together through this important summit and for creating a platform where they can learn, connect and support one another.”

The participants were urged to continue the spirit of unity, cooperation and mutual support shown during the event by Dr Asma'u.

The participants from diverse professional and community backgrounds also applauded the program and emphasized the need to continue the collaboration, mentorship and economic empowerment of women for improving their participation in development.

Some participants voiced their hopes that the networks formed at the summit would last beyond the event and provide opportunities to women and young girls throughout the state.

Political sentiments walked around during the gathering, with some political stakeholders claiming that the mobilization would boost the APC's grassroots support base in the run-up to the 2027 general elections.

The main thrust of the summit, however, was the need for the women to support each other, mentor the younger generation and utilize collective action for social and economic development of Gombe state.
