  • California is among the top states for women-owned businesses
  • Women in Kern County are contributing greatly to entrepreneurship
  • Denisse Coronado owns La Toxica GD in Arvin

According to a recent Business Insider study, California is a recognized leader for female entrepreneurs; its Kern County, in particular, has many women making their mark as entrepreneurs.

Denisse Coronado runs La Toxica GD (located in Arvin) and can share her story of starting herbs as a worker to becoming an entrepreneur. She remembers the joy of getting her first order for beef jerky two years ago, which encouraged her to continue to do more.

Denisse wanted to have a second job to help support her family. She originally started her business with a few flavors of beef jerky, and most of them were sold within Arvin.

As her business grew, so have the people who have helped her grow - like her fellow workers in the fields where she used to work.

It wasn’t until she met with the owner of Chepe's Mexican Restaurant that she began to understand how to package and sell her beef jerky, including how to create labels for her product, including nutritional information and percentages.

According to the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), California is a large majority of the 1.5 Million Women-Owned Businesses in California and is made up of 37 percent of California.

Denisse is honored to be listed as one of the Top 20 States with the most number of Female Owned Business in California, and has plans to grow her business and Distribute Products throughout California and all 50 states.

Another entrepreneur is owner of MJ's Sweet Delights, Martha Rodriguez, who grew her chocolate-covered pretzels business from a Hobby with her sister in 2023 after being diagnosed with Anxiety and Depression, and has used her company to find a way to cope with her struggles.

She is amazed at how much her business has grown so quickly and attributes that growth to staying ahead of Trends. Martha hopes to open a storefront in the Bakersfield area this year or next.

Other highly ranked states in Female Owned Businesses are Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and New Mexico.
