Canada’s women’s flag football team defeated the United States 27-20 to win the world title at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany. The victory capped an unbeaten tournament for the Canadian team and secured its place at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Canada had already qualified for the Olympic Games after defeating world No. 1 Mexico 20-6 in the semifinal. In the final, Frederique Morneau played a key role with three touchdown catches, while quarterback Sara Parker connected with Caroline Moquin-Joubert for another score.
Parker delivered an outstanding performance throughout the tournament, finishing with 23 touchdown passes. Her contribution earned her the Most Valuable Player award in the women’s competition, as Canada completed a perfect run to the world championship title.
The men's team also earned a spot at the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles by defeating Mexico 34-26 in a third-place playoff. The outcome will see Canada's men's and women's flag football teams take on the challenge when the sport debuts in the Olympics in Los Angeles. O'Connor, the quarterback, led the Canadian team with 294 yards and five touchdowns.
Key Highlights:
Former NFL tight-end Antony Auclair had 149 yards in the receiving game and caught two of O'Connor's touchdown passes. Daniel Petermann also had two receptions for touchdowns and James Drysdale scored the other touchdown.
The top two teams from both flag events, not including the host Americans, qualified for Los Angeles where flag football will make its Olympic debut
Canada had a goose egg in the men's semi, but it was a third-place battle for an Olympic spot when the American men also advanced to the final.
"We came to the (world championships) to win, and this group got it done," Canada head coach Paul LaPolice said. "Qualifying for the Olympics doesn't happen by accident, it's the result of a lot of hard work and dedication, and I'm proud of how our athletes competed when it mattered most."
"This is an exciting time for the sport as a whole, and to see both our men's and women's senior teams qualify together, it says a lot about where Canadian flag football is headed," he added.
The 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships took place from August 13 to 16 in Düsseldorf, Germany, bringing together 16 men’s and 16 women’s national teams from around the world. The tournament was particularly significant as it served as the first direct qualification opportunity for flag football’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. Teams competed for the world titles as well as crucial places in the Olympic qualification pathway, highlighting the sport’s growing global popularity.
