Markel Insurance, the insurance division of Markel Group Inc., has strengthened its claims operation in the Middle East and North Africa region with the appointment of Luna Bonifacio to the role of Senior Claims Adjuster, based in Dubai.
Luna will handle casualty claims for the MENA region as part of the Asia claims team, under the management of Bo Yu, Head of Claims for Asia. She will be the primary contact for insured’s and brokers, support underwriters, and contribute to overall client service.
This is Markel's first claims role based in Dubai, and it reflects its commitment to extending its regional footprint while positioning decision-making closer to customers in the APAC and MENA markets.
Luna brings a wealth of experience from her previous leadership roles at Liberty Specialty Markets, Sedgwick, Zurich, and RSA, specializing in casualty claims and regional portfolio development.
Commenting on the appointment, Bo Yu said that the move represents “an important stride in our journey to strengthen Markel’s presence in the region,” adding confidence that Luna’s expertise will improve client value.
Max Robbie, Senior Executive Officer for Markel MENA, said that with Luna’s local presence, the company will respond to changing client needs more effectively and keep service standards high.
Markel Insurance also announced that it will be restructuring its international operations away from a two-division model wholesale and National Markets to five distinct business units by the end of 2025.
The new units will comprise Asia-Pacific, Canada, Europe, and London Market, which includes marine, & energy, PFR & cyber and specialty, and the UK.
This is expected to facilitate quicker decision-making with each business unit able to adapt its strategy to best suit the local market.
The marine & energy, PFR & cyber, and specialty product lines of Markel International will be brought under one leadership in the London Market division. A Managing Director for the London Market will be appointed, with operational responsibility across both Lloyd's and the wider London insurance market.
Tom Hillier has been named CUO, responsible for leading underwriting strategy and governance across all of Markel's international operations. Hillier joined the business in December 2023 from a role leading Markel's specialty practice. He previously held senior positions at Brit Insurance.
All five business units and the CUO role will report to Andrew McMellin, President of Markel International.
The Wholesale Managing Director and National Markets Managing Director roles will be phased out as a result of the transition. Henrik Bjørnstad, who currently holds the position of National Markets Managing Director, will leave the business at the end of the year.
