Marsha Blackburn Makes History as Tennessee's First Woman Governor

Republican U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn has won the 2026 Tennessee gubernatorial election, becoming the first woman to serve as governor of the state. She defeated Democratic candidate Jerri Green and a group of independent candidates in the election held on November 3, 2026. The Associated Press called the race for Marsha late Tuesday night, marking a significant milestone in Tennessee's political history.

Marsha will succeed outgoing Republican Governor Bill Lee, who is completing his second consecutive term and is ineligible to seek re-election under the state's term limits. Her victory comes after a closely watched campaign in which she was widely considered the frontrunner. However, her margin of victory was narrower than some political observers had anticipated amid stronger-than-expected Democratic support in several parts of the country.

Key Highlights:

  • Marsha Blackburn becomes Tennessee’s first woman governor after winning the 2026 election
  • Marsha defeats Democrat Jerri Green and independent candidates to succeed Governor Bill Lee
  • She plans to focus on conservative policies, economic growth and public safety

Green, a Memphis City Council member, was Marsha's main Democratic opponent. Independent candidates, such as businessman David Hatley, ran as well. Election officials in Tennessee reported unofficial results that showed Marsha received about 45.5% of the vote, Green about 43% and Hatley about 9.3%. Even though the Republicans traditionally dominated Tennessee's government, the outcome was a competitive race.

During her campaign, Marsha emphasized conservative policies, such as austerity measures, tougher border controls and the protection of parental rights and a defense of what she called 'woke' or progressive curricula within schools. She was also actively involved in the fight against prohibiting transgender girls and women from playing in school sports, a measure which was passed in Tennessee in 2021. Her campaign was based on economic growth, public safety and the preservation of the state's conservative political identity.

Marsha was pleased with the win, saying it was a success for Tennesseans. She was 'honored and humbled' by the result, she said Tuesday night. She also recognized the role of families, working mothers and fathers, farmers and volunteers in her campaigning and their contribution towards the development of the state.

The election is another milestone in Blackburn's political career. Prior to her campaign for the governorship, she was the senior U.S. senator for Tennessee, a role she held since 2018 when she was elected the first female senator from the state. She was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for Tennessee's 7th Congressional District from 2003 to 2019, and a member of the Tennessee State Senate from 1999 to 2003.

Her political trajectory is defined by her views on taxation, government spending, economic policy and national security, all of which are conservative. While serving in Congress, she also was involved in discussions and legislation related to technology, consumer protection, data privacy and women's issues. Her service in both state and federal government has been an integral part of her political career.

Certification of the results is expected to see Marsha assume office in January 2027. She'll also have to vacate the U.S. Senate upon her move to the governorship. Her administration will be the one to carry out Tennessee's State Government and policy agendas.

Marsha was a historic figure in Tennessee politics when she became the state's first female elected to the highest executive office. Her winning signifies a major leap forward in the leadership of the state and the end of the gubernatorial contest for Bill Lee's seat.
