Keisha Lance Bottoms Becomes Georgia's First Woman Governor

By: Global Woman Leader Team | Wednesday, 4 November 2026

Democrat politician, Keisha Lance Bottoms, has won the elections as Georgia’s governor, thereby setting up a historic win. This made her the first African American woman to become the governor of a US state ever. Reported by US news outlets on Tuesday, her victory serves as an important milestone in the careers of women politicians and also counts as an important win for the Democrats in the fiercely competitive electoral battlefields of the US.

Keisha beat out Republican businessman Rick Jackson and is expected to become both Georgia’s first female governor and first African American woman governor. As an experienced political leader, Keisha, 56, has been working in several high-profile positions during her professional career. Earlier, she worked as the mayor of Atlanta, where she was acquainted with the city work administration and politics at that level.

Key Highlights:

  • Keisha Lance Bottoms becomes the first Black woman elected governor of a US state
  • Byron Donalds makes history as the first Black Republican elected governor in the US
  • Stacey Abrams' campaigns helped reshape Georgia's Democratic voter coalition

Moreover, Keisha’s robust political experience includes her work at the national level of government. In this capacity she worked as a senior adviser to the former President of the USA Joe Biden and director of the White House Office of Public Engagement.

It is noteworthy that her election took place in the context of the long-term underrepresentation of black women in the US's highest elective offices. Although black women have always been a considerable part of the electorate of the Democratic Party and have significantly contributed to the political campaigns and elections, there were not enough chances for them to be in the executive branch at the top level.

The same night saw yet another achievement in the United States Virgin Islands, where Stacey Plaskett won the gubernatorial race. She becomes the first Black woman to become a governor in any US territory. The achievements of these women leaders highlight an important moment in the political career of black women in the USA.

In Florida, Republican US Representative Byron Donalds was elected governor, marking the first time that a Black Republican has become the governor of a US state. This is yet another development in the evolving scene of American political leadership, whereby Black individuals have made history in different states and through different political parties.

Keisha’s victory comes after another milestone in the politics of Georgia. In eight years from now, Stacey Abrams will become the first Black woman to be nominated as the governor by a major political party in the US. Despite failing to win the gubernatorial elections twice, in 2018 and again in 2022, in Georgia, Stacey Abrams was crucial in the political restructuring of Georgia through her political campaigns. Through sustained grassroots mobilization, Stacey built a broad political coalition that included different generations and races, which increased the engagement of Democrats in Georgia politics.

Additionally, the momentum from the political campaign increased the influence of Democrats in other areas as well. Keisha’s' victory is also an indication of a change in the political environment of Georgia.
