Melat Kiros defeated Democratic Representative Diana DeGette in the primary elections of July in Colorado. At 29, Melat has become the first Generation Z woman elected to Congress. Her success in this primary election makes her part of the growing generation of young politicians in America.
Joining the ranks of Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida, she is now part of the first generation to be represented in the Congress. In an interview with CBS News, she spoke about the assistance she received from Maxwell. She found him wonderful and helpful, especially because of their common generational background. "What's intimidating is the sheer amount of knowledge that is necessary to be able to be effective in Congress, and that's going to take time to grow and build," Melat said.
Key Highlights:
Melat understands that there is much to learn and experience before being effective in the legislative duty in January 2027. The young women politician described the need for thorough comprehension of all the issues connected to the legislative duties. In her opinion, the process of forming and executing policies will be a long process of continuous education.
"I'm not burdened by the traditions and the norms of the past," she added. Though recognizing these difficulties, Melat is convinced that her age, vigour, and enthusiasm are her greatest strengths.
Melat is from Addis Ababa in Ethiopia, but moved to Denver in her early childhood. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Washington College in Maryland 2018. After this she attained her law degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2022.
Melat started getting involved in politics after her ouster from the New York City law firm in 2023. Following the ordeal, she went back to Colorado and became the communications director for the 2024 congressional campaign. But it was not until after Donald Trump's successful re-election for president that she started thinking about entering politics herself, possibly through running for Congress.
The success of her campaign in Colorado primary is part of the general trend of victories by progressive candidates. She focused on the economic issues like affordability, in addition to her opposition to support for Israel by US. She based her campaign on the idea of political accountability and leadership.
The Future Caucus study provides information about increasing engagement of Generation Z in American electoral politics. As per “On The Rise 2026,” report, 117 Gen Z candidates nominated themselves for Congress seats in 2026 midterm elections in America. Research showed that just 24 Gen Z candidates were able to make it to the November ballot.
