Mexico Sees Major Surge in Female STEM Graduates: Report

By: gwl team | Thursday, 22 January 2026

  • In 2025, women accounted for 57% of all professional degrees and licenses awarded in Mexico
  • The following data reveals a historical trend of women receiving degrees in STEM fields
  • Over 1.1 million degrees as well as 700,000 licenses had been processed by the government

Women constituted 57 percent of the 1.1 million professional degrees and 700,000 licenses awarded in Mexico in 2025. This shows a statistical boost of women's engagement levels in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), along with the military.

This is due to the modernization of administration and gender equity policy to reach the goals of the government's current administration, according to the Ministry of Public Education: “A diversity of engagement is the goal of innovation."

It is important to highlight that despite the overall increase regarding academic degrees, the inequality is visible: “UNESCO statistics show that only 35 percent of students enrolled in STEM programs are women. This number falls below 20 percent for programs such as Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics. Furthermore, the total number of women working in the technology sector accounts for about 30 percent of the industry, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).”

Reports from the industry say that the lack of women in STEM can have negative impacts on the economy.

Currently, women in STEM make 24 percent more than women in other sectors, yet only hold 13 percent of jobs in this sector and 15.5 percent in tech. Stakeholders in the private sector and civil society say continued technical education and early intervention in education can help narrow this gap for example through primary school robotics programs.

Experts predict that in 2026 there will need to be a combination of policy reforms, corporate mentoring, and training programs to ensure more women are included in high-growth industries and to strengthen the competitiveness of our economies.
