At the U.S. Women's Open on Sunday at Erin Hills, Maja Stark of Sweden won her first major championship with poise. The 25-year-old defeated world No. 1 Nelly Korda and Japan's Rio Takeda by two strokes after shooting an even-par 72 in the final round to finish at 7-under 281.
Maja became the sixth Swedish woman to win a major championship after Annika Sörenstam and Anna Nordqvist, and she took home $2.4 million, the biggest prize in women's golf, for her victory. Stark, a former Oklahoma State standout, has now won two LPGA Tour championships, including the ISPS Handa World Invitational in 2022.
She had a one-shot lead going into the final round and maintained his composure under pressure. Korda showed her dedication to playing fearlessly by making a crucial birdie on the eleventh hole after missing a short par putt on the thirteenth. Takeda, Korda, and Shibuno all made birdies on the 14th to close the gap, but Maja's put her lead further.
She maintained control to win even though she bogeyed the last two holes. Korda finished with a score of 71, and the top contenders were completed by Takeda and a few others, including Hye-Jin Choi, Ruoning Yin, and Mao Saigo. Julia Lopez Ramirez, who plays with Maja, had a rough final round, finishing tied for 19th with a score of 79. Korda improved on her previous best of a tie for eighth in 2022, marking her closest finish to date in a U.S. Women's Open.
