Tao Okamoto became the first Japanese actor to emerge as a winner for the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival on May 23, 2026. The actress was awarded for her lead role in ‘All of a Sudden.’ The moment is witnessed as a landmark achievement for Japanese cinema.
The film was directed by acclaimed Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi, who is known internationally for the movie ‘Drive My Car.’ His movie bagged him the prestigious Oscars for Best International Feature Film.
Tao, who is a part of a team, won the renowned award along with the famous Belgian French actress and former television presenter, Virginie Efira. The two have been seen performing onstage at the awards ceremony.
The 16-minute, three-hour film that is driven by dialogue revolves around intense human interactions that carry layers of emotion. In the plot of the movie, Tao is seen playing a character of a theatre director suffering from an incurable disease, whose path is intertwined with that of Virginie.
Key Highlights:
In a strong display of emotionally nuanced performances, Tao showcases character of a woman who continues to embrace hope despite her deteriorating health, forming meaningful connections within the care facility. Blending French and Japanese narratives, the project is adapted from the exchanges between philosopher Makiko Miyano and anthropologist Maho Isono.
“The simple reason why a mediocre Japanese actress, someone like me, is standing here today is purely because of our amazing director,” Tao said in her acceptance speech, crediting Ryusuke for his screenplay and support.
“The film began with these documents in which two women seemed to exchange their souls, so I want to express my gratitude for their love and courage,” she added.
During her speech at Cannes, Tao acknowledged and paid tribute to the authors whose work inspired the film’s narrative foundation, while addressing the media following the ceremony. She has been demonstrating a successful cross-industry evolution, where she began modelling at the young age of 14 in Chiba Prefecture before relocating to France in 2006.
Fondly known by her first name globally, she built a high-profile fashion career prior to entering Hollywood through a superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character Wolverine, ‘The Wolverine’ in 2013.
In preparation for her acclaimed performance, Tao committed to Ryusuke’s intensive “table read” methodology, repeatedly delivering lines in a neutral tone during weekly sessions conducted over a 10-month period before production commenced.
Two male actors, Yuya Yagira in 2004 and Koji Yakusho in 2023, have previously won the Best actor awards for ‘Nobody Knows’ and ‘Perfect Days’ respectively. Tao becomes the first female actress advancing Japan’s legacy on a global film stage. She has made a new record at the Cannes Film Festival.
