Trinity Rodman Becomes Highest-Paid Player in Women's Soccer

By: WE Staff | Saturday, 24 January 2026

  • Currently, the highest-paid woman in the woman’s game is Trinity Rodman
  • She plays in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) with the Washington Spirit team
  • Trinity’s new deal is reportedly worth about $2 million annually through 2028

Star of the Washington Spirit, Trinity Rodman, has made history by becoming the highest-paid female football player after landing a deal to play until 2028. According to a report by ESPN, Rodman will earn approximately $2 million annually.

On this achievement, she stated that this was a "monumental and game-changing moment in women’s football and women's football business in America."

The National Women's Soccer League, just 13 years of age, has faced challenges in sustaining a lucrative and stable platform in professional soccer. Other countries and European football leagues have established and well-known traditions in soccer.

However, in recent times, there has been a trend wherein soccer superstars from top-tier teams in the United States opt to play in European football leagues in a bid to elevate their salaries.

Moreover, there are pay equity challenges within America itself, as exemplified by lawsuits from its Women's National Team.

For months, the NWSL negotiated ways to keep Rodman in the league. The Washington Spirit, owned by billionaire Michele Kang, were attached to keeping her but couldn’t make a bigger offer because of the league’s salary cap rules.

In response, the league instituted a new “high-impact player” rule, where teams are allowed to offer more to star players based on both their on-field value as well as their commercial value.

That rule has sparked some controversy-the players' union objecting that it wasn’t negotiated and might violate the collective bargaining agreement-but Rodman’s contract will be approved

This development comes in a year that women's sports have seen some challenges. The WNBA, for example, is in talks over a new contract with its players, who want a greater share of league revenues as its 30th season approaches.

Trinity's deal has the potential to set a new benchmark in women's soccer. The financial upside witnessed in women's sports can only be realized when investors secure top talents like Rodman.

The ability of NWSL to retain Rodman should be viewed as a positive development not only for Trinity but also for other future prospects, and long-term growth in the sport.
