Universal Music Publishing Group (UMPG) has appointed Sunita Kaur as President, Asia, as the company continues to strengthen its presence across one of the world’s fastest-growing music markets.

Sunita will serve as the head of UMPG operations in the Asia region, where UMPG will develop greater footprints and drive long-term sustainable growth for the company, as well as contribute to making the music publishing industry more connected and inclusive. She will also handle the expansion of opportunities, partnerships and protections for songwriters and artists throughout the region.

Joining UMPG is like a natural and exciting step in my career, as I've seen music and technology merge in new, powerful ways, and I'm eager to help shape the future of the music ecosystem in Asia and beyond, with my teams.

In announcing his appointment, Gerson said that Asia is one of the most crucial regions for the future of music publishing, and Kaur's long tenure of music, technology and media leadership is impressive.

Key Highlights:

  • UMPG appoints Sunita Kaur as President, Asia, based in Singapore
  • She brings 20+ years of experience, including leadership roles at Spotify, Facebook, and Microsoft
  • Her focus will be expanding opportunities for songwriters as Asia’s music market grows

Sunita has over 20 years' experience in iconic technology and media firms. Before coming to UMPG, she worked at Spotify for almost seven years, holding multiple senior management positions such as Vice President, Revenue, Asia Pacific, and Managing Director, Southeast Asia. She was instrumental in commercial growth and Spotify's expansion throughout the region.

Her previous experience also includes leadership positions at Facebook, Microsoft, Forbes, Singapore Press Holdings, and Time Inc., providing her with extensive expertise across media, advertising, digital platforms, and commercial strategy.

With the development of the creator economy, the expansion of the streaming market, and the opportunities for IP rights in Asian countries in the future, the region has been emerging as an important market for the music industry.

Sunita said: “I’m grateful to Jody and Marc Cimino, Chief Operating Officer at UMPG, for the opportunity to join UMPG at such an exciting time for the company and for music across Asia. Having worked across both music and technology throughout my career, joining UMPG feels like a natural and exciting next chapter as those worlds continue to come together in new and powerful ways.

“Asia is at a defining moment for the global music ecosystem, and I look forward to working with our teams across the region to drive the next phase of growth and opportunity for songwriters.”
