Going beyond just aesthetics, a beautiful smile holds the power to instil confidence within the beholder. Katherine Losada had made this observation early on in her life. She grew up surrounded by medicine, artistry as well as the Venezuelan belief that self-care is an expression of culture.
What started as curiosity during routine dental visits eventually evolved into a lifelong mission to merge health and beauty alongside technology in the pursuit of naturally harmonious smiles.
After completing her graduation degree in Venezuela with a specialization in aesthetic dentistry, Katherine moved to Switzerland where she began her career afresh and made new achievements, learnt advanced technologies and was engaged in research at the top institutions.
Her creativity was the key factor behind the invention of K-lite, a technology for the detection of dental cavities and identification of materials, which made her a recognized name in aesthetic dentistry worldwide
As CEO, Founder and main dentist of Zürich Smile Center, she blends leadership with artistry, guiding her team, elevating patient experiences with championing digital transformation in dental care. Despite the challenges of rapid technological change, she grounds her work in authenticity.
What inspired your passion for aesthetic dentistry and innovation?
My parents, both medical doctors, inspired my dedication to health and wellbeing. Years of being a regular dental patient sparked my fascination with dentistry; the instruments, the technology, and the joy of seeing patients’ lives change through their smiles.
Growing up in Venezuela, where self-care and beauty are part of our culture, shaped my passion for harmonizing health and aesthetics. Alongside dentistry, I earned a Goldsmith certificate, which made me see every tooth as a unique piece of personal jewelry.
After graduating in Venezuela in 1999 with a specialization in aesthetic dentistry, I moved to Switzerland in 2001 and rebuilt my career, first working as a dental hygienist until my degree was recognized.
I later contributed to research at the University of Siena, Universidad Complutence de Madrid and the University of Zurich, training at top technological standards. My passion for innovation led to creating K-lite in 2019, and today, I collaborate globally as a Key Opinion Leader in dental material and instrument development.
I see every tooth as a unique piece of personal jewelry, where health, aesthetics and innovation come together to transform lives through smiles
Introduce us to Zurich Smile Center and your key responsibilities as its CEO and Founder.
Dental Art Switzerland began as the vision of a patient-turned-friend who wanted to open a dental clinic in Zürich in 2020. He invited me to lead the project, eventually offering me the role of CEO and clinical director and supporting me in taking over the company as my own clinical project.
As the CEO, founder, and main dentist, my responsibility is not only to lead the clinic and my team but also to ensure that we continuously work with state-of-the-art techniques and the highest standards of care. I prioritize finding the most advanced and efficient methods to deliver excellent results safely and swiftly.
My focus is on top-quality treatment, exceptional service, and personalized attention, always prioritizing patient health while achieving the best possible aesthetic outcomes.
What key challenges do you face in your role? How do you effectively overcome them?
One major challenge for me has been understanding leadership, as dentistry school doesn’t teach you how to guide a team. This pushed me to take a leadership course at the University of Zurich to understand how to lead effectively. Over time, leadership has shifted from simply being a boss to becoming part of a team family.
New challenges also emerge with changing technology and trends. Many patients now research treatments online, rely on social media, and often encounter misleading information, arriving with high expectations or requests that aren’t always clinically realistic.
Managing this while ensuring they feel understood is significant. By keeping empathy first, I create space for open communication and guide them toward what is best for their health while addressing their aesthetic goals.
How do you see technology reshaping the future of aesthetic and conservative dental care?
Today’s technology is remarkable; small digital adjustments can create a major aesthetic impact. With AI, we can preview results, calculate proportions, simulate designs, and visualize outcomes with high accuracy.
In oral health and conservative dentistry, technology shortens treatment times, improves efficiency, reduces anxiety, and strengthens the dentist–patient relationship by making workflows faster and more predictable.
Yet, digital transformation also brings challenges. Managing large volumes of patient data, ensuring cybersecurity, and maintaining a fully digital workflow require responsibility and consistency from the entire team.
Standardization minimizes errors and ensures quality care. Ultimately, digital smile design is a vital communication tool that helps patients understand treatment possibilities and visualize results, making planning more efficient and predictable for everyone.
Which milestones are you most proud of? How have authenticity and cultural adaptation shaped your journey?
Looking back on my journey, the milestone I am most proud of is staying authentic throughout my career; both in what I know and in what I continue to learn.
It was challenging as a professional woman and mother of two, yet it became one of my greatest motivations. Bringing enthusiasm, joy, and passion into my work and seeing how it positively impacts others, has been incredibly rewarding.
Creating my own brand, style, and way of working while caring for my family has been a major accomplishment, especially after believing in my personal approach despite advice to simply adapt.
Honesty has always guided my work, especially when recommending treatments or making clinical decisions.
