Chou Ling-wen Makes History as CTBA's First Woman President

Chou Ling-wen is the first woman to be elected president of the Chinese Taipei Baseball Association (CTBA), a historic milestone for women to assume leadership in sports governance. Her appointment is a testament to the increasing role women play in decision-making processes and underscores the value of varied leadership in the sport's future.

Chou won the surprise victory in the CTBA's 14th board election over fellow board member J.W. Kuo, founder of Topco Scientific Co, and Lin Hua-wei, a former member of the national team and coach who was considered the top contender. She replaces Jeffrey Koo Jr., outgoing president of the association, after the association's 14th General Assembly and the first joint meeting of its newly elected board of directors and supervisors.

Accepting the role, Chou emphasized that leadership is rooted in service rather than authority.

"I view this role not as a position of power, but as unconditional service."

She also voiced her aspirations to make the CTBA “the warmest and strongest home” for all people involved in baseball in Taiwan. As an executive who has managed big domestic baseball games, Chou is ready to push for the sport's future by further strengthening cooperation among the CTBA, Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) and government bodies, she said.

In recognition of the effort of her predecessor Jeffrey Koo Jr., she attributed its success to his leadership in enhancing cooperation between the CTBA and the CPBL, which led to a more coordinated development of national team and participation in international tournaments.

Chou will place particular focus on grassroots baseball, as the new president of the association, and will attempt to standardize play at the youth, junior-high and high-school levels. Her agenda also involves further developing coaching resources, increasing sports science programs, and promoting injury prevention programs to build better athlete developement pathways.

Chou's leadership experience is not limited to sports. She was also encouraged by her father, Chou Ping-te, a founding member of the Democratic Progressive Party, to serve four consecutive terms as a Kaohsiung city councilor and then led several public-sector organizations. She joined the world of sports administration in 2024 as Vice President of CTBC Sports Entertainment, where she contributed to the success of significant homegrown baseball tournaments and ensured robust business collaborations.
