South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster has appointed Darline Graham Nordone, the younger sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham, to serve the remainder of his U.S. Senate term. The appointment, announced on Monday, follows the death of the longtime Republican senator, whose term was set to end on January 3.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Graham Nordone, McMaster described the appointment as both a legal duty and a personal honor.

"Today, under the law, it's my duty and honor to name someone to serve in the place of this irreplaceable man for the remainder of his term," McMaster said. "Lindsey took care of his little sister in years long departed. It's my honor to ask his little sister, Darline Graham, to finish his work for him now."

Accepting the appointment, Graham Nordone expressed gratitude for the opportunity to continue her brother's legacy.

"It is such an honor," she said. "Lindsey has always been there for me, and now I will be there for him."

She is scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday afternoon and will make history as the first woman to represent South Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

Key Highlights:

  • Darline Graham Nordone becomes South Carolina's first woman U.S. senator.
  • She will serve the remainder of Lindsey Graham's Senate term until January 3.
  • A Republican primary on August 11 will determine candidates for the vacant seat.

The appointment came shortly after President Donald Trump publicly endorsed Graham Nordone for the temporary position in a post on Truth Social, calling her selection "a fabulous tribute to Lindsey." Senator Tim Scott also backed the appointment, stating that no one better understood Lindsey Graham's commitment to his family, South Carolina, and the nation.

Lindsey Graham died on Saturday at the age of 71 after suffering a rupture of his aorta caused by hardening of the arteries, according to a preliminary medical assessment released by his office. A prominent Republican lawmaker, Graham had served in the Senate since 2003 and was campaigning for a fifth term after winning the Republican primary earlier this year.

The siblings shared an especially close bond. After the death of their parents—first their mother from Hodgkin lymphoma and later their father from a heart attack—Lindsey Graham legally adopted his 13-year-old sister while he was in his early twenties. Over the years, both frequently spoke about the challenges they faced and the support they gave one another.

Before entering the Senate, Graham Nordone served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind, where she oversaw programs supporting individuals who are blind or have low vision through vocational training and independent living services. She earned a bachelor's degree in sociology from the College of Charleston in 1989.

It remains unclear whether Graham Nordone intends to seek election to the seat. Under South Carolina law, candidates wishing to contest the Senate seat must file during a one-week period beginning July 21, with a special Republican primary scheduled for August 11.

Several Republicans are already considering bids for the seat. Businessman Mark Lynch has confirmed his candidacy and pledged $5 million to his campaign after previously challenging Graham in this year's Republican primary. Representative Nancy Mace is also reportedly weighing a run, while former Lieutenant Governor Pamela Evette has received encouragement from political allies to enter the race. Representative Joe Wilson, however, has ruled out a Senate bid, stating that he intends to remain in the House of Representatives.
