General Motors (GM) Africa & Middle East reveals its collaboration with Tanweer, a start-up non-profit Egyptian academic institution, to introduce a Technology Enhancement certification program as part of Tanweer's larger Empowering Women Educators initiative.
After marking 100 years of progress throughout the Middle East and Africa, GM's new collaboration demonstrates its deep-rooted dedication to promoting STEM and developing local talents in Egypt. The initiative helps women educators not only to deepen their knowledge of technology but also to obtain official certifications, which in turn makes them more effective as mentors and leaders in both their work and communities at large.
Continuing a reflection GM's deep-rooted commitment to the community is further manifested in the program that is expected to certify about 75 female Egyptian teachers. Through the vehicle of their global leadership in automotive production and advanced technology, General Motors is making a bet on this socially responsible initiative to not only work on the development of local talent but also to help support the broader industrial ecosystem and equip the skills which will be required in future-ready economies.
Key Highlights:
The partnership between Tanweer and third-party accredited certification, which is based on Tanweer's understanding of the localities, will be able to significantly improve the technological competence of the teachers.
So, they will be producing tech-savvy students at the same time they will be giving them the values of diversity in line with local breakthroughs in innovations.
Tanweer is a non-profit organization working towards providing quality education to a larger audience and promoting skills development in Egypt as a whole. It is registered to work throughout the country and the programs it delivers aim to increase cultural, scientific, and educational capacity. Its main focus is on empowering teachers, youth, and families. Besides fostering innovation in education especially in STEM fields, the organization also values inclusion, environmental responsibility, and reaching out to communities that are usually ignored.
The program offers hybrid group mentorships with executives of GM's regional leadership and the trainees also get continuous post-training support that ensures long-term benefits and career development. This method guarantees both reach and trustworthiness, at the same time, the educators' capabilities are improved not only through traditional teaching methods but also through in-house programs. In addition, Tanweer has already signed a contract with Cairo's Lycées Des Lumières school for the pilot of the program and will now be ready to extend to other educational institutions.
As Egypt's economy is evolving swiftly, a strong demand for a well-prepared STEM workforce has arisen. Per a survey by Nexford in 2026 of employers, 78% of Egyptian companies have difficulties locating suitable talent, among which Business Analytics (52%), Digital Transformation (45%), and Technology Literacy (27%) are pinpointed as the main areas with the largest skill shortages. These numbers highlight a pressing requirement: teachers should be provided with top-level STEM and digital skills in order to create graduates who are really prepared for the world of work.
