Women’s health has often been treated as an afterthought by global healthcare services. For a demographic that forms nearly half of the world’s population, women receive the short end of the stick in terms of dedicated healthcare services and facilities. Referred to as femtech (female technology), this recently popularised sector refers to software, diagnostics, products, and medical devices that use technology to address and support women's health. The term was coined in 2016 by Ida Tin, the founder of the period-tracking app Clue.

The global femtech sector is currently valued at $39.3 billion in 2024 (Grand View Research) and is forecast to hit $97.3 billion by 2030, with a 16.4% CAGR, indicating a swift reorientation towards technology-enabled women's healthcare services.

The rapid growth of femtech as an industry has been a result of the grave disparity persistent in global healthcare investments. Women's health receives only 6% of private healthcare funding all over the world (World Economic Forum), although women make up nearly half of the world's population. Women also bear the greater burden of unrecognized and less-studied diseases.

Femtech is rooted in the existing gap in the diagnosis and treatment of women’s health disorders. One of the disorders that has become commonplace for millions of women around the world is endometriosis. It impacts approximately 190 million women globally. Despite its common occurrence, endometriosis usually takes seven to ten years to diagnose due to the system’s inability to diagnose it earlier.

In the same way, PCOS is a condition affecting up to 8–13% of women across the globe (WHO). Notwithstanding, inconsistent screening procedures keep delaying the proper identification and treatment of this widespread condition.

However, including a broader definition, the women's health technology ecosystem is worth nearly $60 billion (Statista, 2024), depending on which fertility care, diagnostics, digital therapeutics, and wellness platforms are included.

A Shift in Women’s Healthcare Service Delivery: The expansion of this model reflects an essential change in the way healthcare is delivered, i.e., continuous monitoring, data-driven diagnostics, and preventive health systems are taking the place of episodic clinical interventions. A Grand View Research report concludes that one of the key drivers behind the femtech market’s growth at a 16.4% CAGR is the increasing adoption of AI technologies. The market today has a broad range of applications for AI technologies, including predicting infertility, optimizing IVF cycles, assessing maternal risks, and disease detection systems.

A Funding Ecosystem Defined by Structural Inequality

Despite the growth experienced by femtech, there exist several challenges in capital allocation to femtech players. As stated by Galen Growth, the collective venture capital invested in femtech companies amounted to around $2.2 billion in 2024. Although this statistic may indicate the rising popularity of femtech and its impending potential, the amount of money spent on the problem is rather insignificant considering the scope of global healthcare service problems.

According to a McKinsey analysis of venture capital inflows into digital health, femtech comprises a mere 3% of the overall investment made in the industry. What makes this statistic more notable is the fact that the industry is designed to target health issues that impact about half of the world’s population, yet its total investment share remains meagre.

The lack of adequate investment is not confined to early-stage companies and impacts the whole value chain of healthcare.

Femtech’s Future: A Market Transitioning Through Lifecycle Health Demands

The development of femtech in the future will be more about lifecycle-driven healthcare solutions as opposed to segmented healthcare products based on their type. The focus is now shifting from condition-specific care or standalone tools to lifecycle-driven solutions that address women's varied needs at different points in their lives.

In such an emerging scenario, menopause can easily be considered one of the most important and fastest-growing sectors in terms of healthcare needs. It is estimated that around 1.2 billion women worldwide will either be going through menopause or have gone through it by the year 2030, making it one of the most underserved sections in healthcare all across the globe.

Key Femtech Growth Areas and Unmet Health Needs: Fertility technology is one of the more mature sub-segments in femtech owing to the sheer frequency of infertility that affects one out of six individuals worldwide, as reported by the World Health Organization (WHO). The high incidence of infertility has been a major contributor to the rapid advances in innovations like optimizing in-vitro fertilization, sophisticated hormonal monitoring devices, and AI-enabled technologies.

On the other hand, key diseases affecting the health of millions of women worldwide are still not being diagnosed properly. This serves as a powerful motivation for innovations in this field. There is a growing need for better diagnostic methods, monitoring, and a more personal approach to the provision of healthcare services for women, and innovators who focus on unmet needs will stand to grow.

Femtech Concerns: Privacy, Ethics, and the Trust Barrier

With the increasing data-driven nature of femtech, issues pertaining to privacy and the ethical use of data have become key considerations when looking at scaling up femtech in the future. A digital health security review conducted in 2024 identified that most femtech applications show vulnerabilities consistent with the OWASP Top 10 cybersecurity threats, posing problems for the safe handling of very sensitive reproductive health data.

In contrast to conventional health apps, femtech applications deal with extremely private details like menstrual cycles, fertility goals, pregnancy status, hormonal changes, and sexual health markers.

The Future of Femtech

Femtech has been identified as the key pillar for the future of global healthcare systems because of its predicted value of $97.3 billion by 2030, existing financing gaps, and massive unmet medical needs. The femtech movement is an intersection of artificial intelligence, digital health architecture, and traditional gender imbalances in medical research and investment.
