Kingston Joins Carter Center's Women-Focused Global Initiative

  • Kingston has been chosen as part of 13 cities in the world to participate in the Carter Center's Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign
  • The campaign is aimed at enhancing the access of women to government information and city services

 

Kingston, Jamaica, is among 13 cities worldwide selected to be part of the Carter Center's Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, which is an international initiative to provide women with access to and information about government information and city services.

The Mayor of Kingston Councillor Andrew Swaby says he is not surprised by the news. "This clearly shows that Kingston has taken steps to improve gender equality."  "Being chosen by the Carter Center is an honor and a fit for our vision to empower women," said Andrew.

"The campaign also offers us the opportunity to examine other gender-equality models, including the embracing of CEDAW, further cementing Kingston as a city that champion’s women and openness."

The campaign offers support and guidance to participating cities to make sure that women know about and have access to the services important to their health. Activities under the program are media outreach, community programs, government training, public art works, and knowledge-sharing opportunities for participating cities.

Kingston, Jamaica, has been selected as one of 13 cities worldwide to join the Carter Center's Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign, an international movement aimed at facilitating access to government information and city services for women.

The initiative guides and assists cities which take part in the program to ensure that women know and have access to services that are beneficial to their wellbeing.

The campaign's activities include community programs, media outreach, government training, public art installations, and knowledge sharing amongst the participating cities.

The Kingston Campaign is now entering its 4th cohort; five continents, 48 cities, and more than 255 million people represent Kingston, which joins the following cities: Abuja, Nigeria; Cardiff, Wales; Guadalajara, Mexico; Karachi, Pakistan; Kisumu County, Kenya; Liverpool, England; Medellin, Colombia; Recife, Brazil; Rosario, Argentina; Tangier, Morocco; Toronto, Canada; and Tulsa, USA.

The campaign launches in March with a nod to the International Day of Universal Access to Information, showcasing the campaign's support of transparency and the right to information.
