According to UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett, restricting women’s education in Afghanistan threatens the country’s social, economic, and international. Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Richard emphasized that Taliban’s focus on religious indoctrination over formal education is depriving Afghanistan’s youth of opportunity and hope.
He underscored the importance of rigorous reporting to shape international policy and advocacy, cautioning that without reliable evidence, the challenges faced by Afghan women and girls could fade from global attention.
Richard urged the creation of platforms for Afghans, including Islamic scholars and professionals, to ensure that their ideas, voices, and perspective shape global understanding, according to Tolo News. He further drew attention to the group’s ongoing suppression of civil society and targeting of dissenters, underscoring that their actions continue to be monitored by the international community.
He also remarked that limiting women’s and girl’s education could fuel long-term instability, isolate Afghanistan internationally, and squander a generation’s potential. According to a recent Atlantic Council report highlighted by Tolo News. The Taliban’s return has left more than a million Afghan girls without schooling. The council emphasized that in Afghanistan, seeking education is now a form of defiance.
