Kuwait Pledges Support for Women in Leadership at Beijing Summit

Jassem Al-Najem, the Ambassador of Kuwait to China, reiterated Kuwait's commitment to supporting women's leadership and entrepreneurship at the Global Women's Summit opened by Chinese President Xi Jinping and other heads of state and international organizations from around the world.

At the first day of the summit, Jassem spoke of Kuwait's interest in strengthening cooperation with China and UN Women through joint programming for the benefit of North Arabian women's capabilities in all fields of work.

Kuwait undertakes initiatives to create a more prosperous and equitable world for women and noted that the summit is an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to women's empowerment and sustainable development on a global scale.

During the event, Xi Jinping announced that he would provide US$10 million to UN Women and US$100 million for the projects that promote women's development.

He said the funds would provide support for 1,000 small businesses run by women, guarantee 50,000 women the opportunity of training, and establish an international center of capacity development for women worldwide.

He then proposed a few initiatives to promote the development of women which included the promotion of peace; the fight against violence towards women; positioning women to innovate and use technology; governance of women; and education and health access. He cited international cooperation to support these initiatives including within the UN.

The Global Women's Summit held under the theme "Shared Destiny: Accelerating the Path to Women's Comprehensive Development" had UN agencies, international organizations, and China's accredited ambassadors.
