Qatar Airways broke history yesterday as its regular flight from Brussels to Doha was operated by a 100 percent female crew of 15. From the pilots operating the aircraft to the cabin crew, it was the airline's very first flight manned by an all-women crew and executed on an Airbus A350.
This flight also coincides with Qatar Airways' leading investment in gender diversity in the aviation industry. Recently, the airline signed a 10-year deal with International Air Transport Association (IATA) to support the promotion of the "IATA Diversity & Inclusion Awards" with a view to promote gender representation in the aviation industry. The first award recipients will receive their awards at the IATA Annual General Meeting in June.
Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker emphasized the airline's dedication to promoting gender parity and remarked: "This flight serves to underscore our broader vision for promoting gender balance at every level within the airline and the wider aviation industry."
Violeta Bulc, European Commissioner for Transport, commented that today women represent only around 5 percent of pilots across the globe, so such initiatives are particularly meaningful. Isabella De Monte, Member of the European Parliament, emphasized the symbolic value of the flight and pointed out that it is a strong symbol of the EU-Qatar spirit of equality and partnership in the Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement.
