Singapore Airlines Appoints JoAnn Tan as First Female CFO

By: Global Woman Leader Team | Monday, 25 May 2026

Singapore Airlines has appointed JoAnn Tan as its first-ever female Chief Financial Officer (CFO), marking a historic milestone for the airline and highlighting the growing presence of women in senior leadership roles within the global aviation industry.

The appointment was made part of a wider leadership overhaul at the company and was effective from September 2023. Tan Kai Ping moved into the job of Chief Operating Officer (COO) while JoAnn Tan replaced him.

Singapore Airlines' leadership shift was met with a great deal of interest in the aviation and corporate worlds, the airline having never before had a woman in its top finance role in over five decades of history.

JoAnn Tan has been with Singapore Airlines since 1999, and has held various strategic and operational positions for over 20 years. Before assuming the role of CFO she was the Senior Vice President of Marketing Planning, contributing to the airline's recovery from the massive disruption due to COVID-19. When the world began to reopen, she played a crucial role in reviving the international network, passenger demand and commercial operations for the airline.

JoAnn has held various key roles in Singapore Airlines' business throughout her career, including network revenue management, business transformation, loyalty marketing and product development. This broad base of experience gave her high visibility in the organisation, and as the economy began to recover and grow in the airline industry, she was well-qualified to take on the role of leading the financial policy of the airline.

Key Highlights:

  • Singapore Airlines named JoAnn Tan as its first female CFO
  • Tan played a major role in the airline’s post-pandemic recovery
  • The appointment marks a boost for gender diversity in aviation leadership

The appointment was a big step forward for gender diversity in aviation leadership, according to industry experts. While there has been a growing trend to involve women in leadership positions in all sectors of the business world, aviation still has a comparatively small female workforce in executive roles, including financial and operational roles. JoAnn Tan's appointment is thus being seen as symbolic and strategic, in line with the changing dynamics of airline leadership.

Singapore Airlines is a well-established and respected airline in Asia, renowned for its high-quality services, extensive network, and robust financial management. Since the pandemic, the airline group has seen a rapid rebound in travel demand and financial results and is prioritizing long-term growth, profitability and resilience, making the transition to the role of chief financial officer particularly significant.

Tan's vast experience and knowledge of the airline's commercial operations could bolster Singapore Airlines' financial planning and strategic decisions in the coming years, observers added. The appointment has also been hailed by diversity advocates as an inspiring example to other businesses in male-dominated sectors.

The transfer is part of a trend that's taking place in many major companies worldwide to embrace multiple leadership talents and offer more chances for women to advance into senior leadership positions. JoAnn Tan's selection is a historic first and forward-looking step for Singapore Airlines for its future leadership.
