In a bid to encourage greater serious discourse on women's leadership and mentorship, Women in Successful Careers (WISCAR), in partnership with the British Deputy High Commission, Lagos, hosted a Book Reading and Advocacy Event. It was excellently attended by students of universities, Chevening alumni, WISCAR mentors and protégés, and women in business.
Hosted in Lagos, the event was the launch and reading of the “WISCAR Mentoring Book” an inspirational book of learning’s and experiences of sector leaders on the career-defining impact of mentorship on women's careers across sectors.
British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter and WISCAR Chairperson and Founder Amina Oyagbola commenced the programme with some inspirational words that emphasized the need to create platforms that will facilitate women's career growth.
“Mentorship can be a turning point,” Amina noted. “At WISCAR, we’ve witnessed how structured support and leadership development can change the course of women’s careers.” Since its establishment in 2008, WISCAR has empowered over 10,000 women through mentoring, leadership training, and advocacy programs. Its flagship one-year mentoring initiative has equipped hundreds of young professionals with the tools and confidence to thrive in their careers.
In the future, WISCAR also announced plans to introduce a focused mentoring program for women lawyers that will offer mentorship, leadership and strategic networking to enhance their law careers.
Among the standout features of the event was a panel session named "Championing Women's Leadership in the Workplace," with influential speakers in the persons of Toki Mabogunje, Lola Esan, and Fabia Ogunmekan. The speakers bemoaned experience and professional insight on inclusive leadership, workplace gender equality, and the need for mentorship in building future women leaders.
The conference also featured a “Mentor-Mentee Fireside Chat” between Adedoyin Pearse and Nima Jo-Madugu, which presented a powerful, first-hand experience of how reflective mentoring relationships can give women the clarity, guidance, and confidence on the career path.
As a curtain raiser for the event, three of the invitees received awards in the form of copies of the WISCAR Mentoring Book. The event was not only a celebration but also a confirmation of WISCAR's commitment to raising a generation of high-achieving, ethical, and community-driven female leaders in Nigeria.
